“John Smith will Dance

~ AN INDIANAPOLIS youth is fighting one of the toughest battles of his life in the quietest way he knows how, Until 11 months ago John Tei Smith was a member of Katherine Dunham's star-stud-ded dance troupe. Now he's looking forward to discharge from Sunnyside gSanatorium next March and a return to dancing. His story begins just five years ago. Shortly after he was graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1946, Jon Lei, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Gaines, 362 W. 31st 8t., went to Chicago for a week-end and stayed nine months.

Benefited by the training he had received in ballet dancing from Eileen Poston at Jordan Conservatory while he was living with his parents in Indianapolis, Jon lei was able to join a Chicago dancing group headlined by Carmencita Romero. For “approximately a year” he stayed with this show as it made the hotel circuit in Chicago, and later in Canada.

IN NOVEMBER, 1947 searching for a bigger part in . the theatrical world, he went to New York City and enrolled in Katherine Dunham’s School of Dancing.

After five months’ study in ballet, interpretive, Cuban and Haitian folk dancing, he became a member of the Dunham cast. Jon ZLei's first performance. with Miss Dunham’s troupe was in the Prince of Wales Theater, London, The show’ was there for six months. Then" followed engagements in France, Belgium, Sweden, Italy, The Netherlands and Switzerland. Command performances were given for King Gustavus of Sweden, Queen Juliana of The Netherlands and later, for the Perons of Argentina. “We had gone to South Amerfca in May, last year,” the performer explains. “In addition to Argetina, we gave shows in

Brazil, Peru. “While we were in Lima last January, I caught what I thought was a cold. I couldn’t ‘shake it,’ so I went to a doctor. After an examination, he ordered me to bed.”

His friends in Hollywood and New York City stand ready to | help him in this once he is discharged from Sunnyside, As his friends include Gene Kelly, Edith Piaf, Yvonne DeCarlo, the Nicholas Brothers and other outstanding show people, Jon Lei's hopes are high.
