Scripture: “He that Ioveth his life shall lose it.” Jon 12:25.

“If were a man,” says a character in one of our novels, “I'd take life by the throat and chojee something big out of 1s That woman is*irst cousin to a host of modern people. For there

our time that the secret of suc< cessful living is in self-asser-tion. But Jesus looked at this life of ours—and men believed in self-assertion in his day, too— and he said, that approach is

all wrong. The way to life is-

not self-assertion but self-deni-al. The secret of fruitful living is not in keeping but in losing. The, secret of real living is hidden in the art of self-denial. This crazy notion of the gamhler which seems to have taken over America today, that you can get something for nothing, just doesn’t obtain in the realm where real living is done. There the motto is “He that lovéth his life shall lose it.” ~ » » NOW MOST of us rebel at being told that we must give up in order to gain. We like to think that somehow we can

have it both ways. We want a -

good time in school and a good record, too. We want comfort and yet also a tough body. We want to spend and yet also save. We want to go with the crowd and yet have a clear conscience. We want to consume rich food and keep a school girl figure. But Jesus knew, as we do when we think, that life was not put together that way,

perform delicate operations, and enjoy life to boot. But most of us have to lose one in order to gdin the other. The strange thing about this idea we are thinking of today, is that the people who “lose their life,” as the Master suggeated, do get the most out of e. A person has power over others in inverse relation to the size of his ego. The most joyful people are the most sacrificial. The mother of 10 children never talks about her sacrifices — she is often the most radiant person on her street. The fellow who comes back from the war a hero laughs it off when people praise him for his heroism.
