Bradley Shocked Over| Charges Made by Juror Trying Cage Fix Case
By United Press PEORIA, Til. Dee.
basketball “hub” of the Midwest was shocked today at the charges of Judge Saul 8. Streit who lashed Bradley University and particularly David Blair Owen, president of the college. Streit was accused of “not understanding the situation” by Harry Mitchell, head of the Bradley Boosters Association. Streit gave suspended sentences to three Bradley basket-
ball players who admitted “shav-| ing points” in several games for bribes they accepted from gam-|
blers. Streit blamed Owen for his “extensive traveling with the team while their studies were ignored,” and said Owen gave official university sanction to their “moral debasement.”
o ” » OWEN SAID he “had to com-| mend Judge Streit for his efforts | in trying to improve the tone of college basketball.” “But the judge's remarks about me are unfair,” Owen said. Owen said that everything he had done “was in the best interests of the school and strictly honest.” In reply to Streit's blast at the Bradley Boosters, Mitchell said that the club actyally gave “less money to the athletes going to Bradley, I believe, than any school in the Missouri Valley Conference.” “The amounts we gave them were so trivial it would be ridic-| ulous for. me to even mention it,” he said.

Freshmen Ruled Out of Big 10
CHICAGO, Dec. 8 (UP)— Freshmen will be ineligible for Big Ten intercollegiate sports next year, the conference faculty representatives ruled yesterday. The vote ended a one-year suspension of the old rule that kept first-year men out of the varsity lineups. “Nothing in the present situation makes further waiver of the rule advisable,” they said. The representatives waived the old rule last year to make sure government manpower requirements would not cut too deeply into collegiate teams. In other actions yesterday, the representatives approved added eligibility for George Jacoby, University of Michigan trackman, and Joe Campanella, an Ohio State football player. 4 Campanella was called Into service after playing in only two games this year and will be eligible to play in all but two games of a season's schedule when he returns. Jacoby got another year of eligibility - because. an asthmatic condition kept him from competing in all but a few early season events.
Earlham, St. Joe Win Cage Tilts
Earlham and St. Joseph's edged out victories over out-of-state foes in Hoosier college basketball games last night, but Rose Poly suffered its first defeat of the season. at the hands of a foreign rival. - Earlham’s Quakers squeezed by Oberlin, 76 to 75. It was Earlham’s third straight win after losing an opener to Ball State. St. Joseph’s beat St. Norbert’s, 59 to 51, in a Midland Conference game, for its fourth win in five starts this seasén. ] Greenville pushed Rose Poly out | of the undefeated ranks, 63 to 53, |

Owen replied to charges of Streit that he accompanied the team on trips so ‘that he could speak to alumni groups by saying that he has “always maintained a very active interest in .the school’s alumni and I have spoken at many places where basketball never was played.” Owen promised a detailed reply to the charges of Streit later and {scheduled an immediate confer|ence with other university officials to study the university's position in the matter.
» » ” PUBLIC RELATIONS Director Harry Watson said it was doubtful if the reply would be ready bfore the first of next week. Mayor Joseph O. Malone also defended Peoria, accused of being basketball crazy. He said he believed neither the university nor the town was to blame for the downfall of the three players. “They have only themselves to| blame,” he said. | | He said that the city adminis-| |tration took no part in promoting the basketball team, although he said he once went out to greet the team when it returned from a trip.
