Though not, of course, replaced the shibboleths of a gen-'thor of “Sirocco,” he turned his; “His room could be a setting —dropping work for the time be-/and veterinarians listed his diet when they were beginning to talk| against the same things.
about Noel Coward as a has-been| he has stagéd a remarkable come-| back in his native land.
First, he did a month's solo act at the Swank Cafe De Paris, playing and singing all the old] songs from the bright, cynical, naughty twenties for which he is) famous. {
Princess Margaret, the Duchess|
of Kent, ahd all.the other blue-| bloods in town turned out in force] to listen and applaud. Mr. Coward got $2800 a week and did so well| the management offered to keep| him on indefinitely.
Tt was undoubtedly the biggest personal hit since Maurice Chevalier's solo theater act three years, ago. Poker-faced regulars at the Cafe De Paris who normally sit| on their hands, uninhibitedly applauded Mr. Coward and came back night: after night. But when the month was up, Mr. Coward, shrewd showman that he is, said “no, thank you very much” to the management's offer and left the customers while they were still thirsting for more.
He doesn’t need the money and anyhow he had other fish to fry. A few months ago, a new Coward play opened in the west end. It’s called “Relative Values” and it’s had very good reviews. “Here is the Noel Coward of | gaiety, sparkle, incisive wit using his effortless technique to produce] an absurdly funny play,” says the| Sunday Express. “The” plot is about the dilemma of a countess who learns that the Hollywood star her son intends to marry is the sister of her maid.” : The Sunday Times says, “Time| is a great tamer of ferocity and one might have been afraid, per-| haps, that Noel Coward would become & “good “doy, a social yesman, and a conformist. Happily, his latest play, the best he has written for several years, shows that he is about to enter 1952 as much a rebel as he was

BERLIN, Dec. T (CDN)—The Soviet Union is making a determined effort to keep the entire
question of Germany outside the United Natidns but has left the way open for compromise.
‘The Eastern Germans, acting] under Soviet direction, have in-| dicated they will not send repre-| sentatives to Paris to discuss the] conditions under which all-Ger-| man elections might be held.
They are continuing to insist that election procedures must be vottled ‘in direct negotiations betvasn east and west German ~onresentatives. They say, how--r, that these could “consider” » aregtion of some form of in‘~rnational supervision of voting. They also havé proposed that Jorlin should be made a single voting district. This, conceivably, could be preliminary to accepting Mayor Ernst Reuter’s proposals that all-Berlin elections be held first as a test for later Germany-wide voting. A four-power . election law 4lFeaqy exists in Berlin under which] a reasonably honest supervised poll was conducted five years ago. The . Communists in that] election received less than one-| fifth of the total vote. { Western German, meantime, | has moved quickly to send its representatives to Paris.

everything from vitamin’ cookies to comic strips as a means of fighting “the big lle of Communism,” according to the National Greenwood Plan committee. The committee, a branch of the Crusade for Freedom, has selected fifteen finalists in a na-tion-wide contest seeking ideas for getting truth behind the Iron Curtain. Winners will be named from these to visit the Freedom Bell shrine in Berlin and Radio Free Europe. Joseph Fessler, Phoenix, Ariz, suggested dropping vitamin-rich cookies containing messages on freeddm to Iron Curtain countries. Elizabeth Porcher, Greenwood, said comic strips poking fun at communism would do the job.
