QUESTION: My husband has high blood pressure. Would the drinking of alcoholie liquors have any effect? Does anger .and excitement bring the blood pressure up or is that just a superstition? ANSWER: Heavy drinking of alcoholic beverages would certainly be unwise, Some doctors do allow moderate quantities for those with high blood pressure, however. The effect of anger and excitement is not ‘a superstition; these emotions often cause the pressure to rise 30 or 40 points in a few minutes.

Your Hair Can Be Brightened, Too

By HELEN WYLE ‘NY proud lass who wants to redecorate - her house should take a good look at herself first

before she selects the colors of walls and furniture.

She should ask herself if she will fit in with the general color harmony of the house.

Facial make-up alone isn’t enough to consider. The color of her topknot is also important. In fact, it is the largest color area around her face and should be seriously considered in relation to the color scheme of her home.

If a woman’s hair is dull’ and faded, rather than shining and rich with color highlights, the result is obvious. ‘The lady with the drab, nondpscript hair risks the possibility of melting indistinguishably

dabbed on close to the scalp and worked into the hair with the fingers until a rich lather forms,

The lather stays in the hair from five to 30 minutes, depending on the color intensity desired. A soaping of plain shampoo follows and a clear water rinse completes the job. The Blensol color shampoo lasts for from six to eight weeks and is available in 19 shades. A regular shampoo may be used in between Blensol applications and the color will not wash or rub off. One day Cubby tells her that his friend Bill's mother has invited him to lunch. But when she telephones Bill's mother to explain that Cubby

has to go shopping with her, she discovers there was no invitation. She laughs and says, “Just Cubby’s imagination again.” Even to herself, she does not call her young son's lie a “lie.” I find this inconsistent of Cubby’s mother, She knows that she has Been able to give wholesome sex instruction to her child becduse her own feeling about sex is wholesome, Why, then, doesn’t she see that her refusal to use the honest,

“le?” > & @

IFF WE ARE frightened by the word “lie,” we

should find out why.

If we aren't afraid of it,

we should be able to use the word to Cubby to describe the absence of truth as naturally and simply as we use the word “night” to describe

the absence of ‘day.

We should try to discover why we resist the

word “lie.”

The discovery may be important to

our own independence of people who have made

us afraid of it.

power to disturb us, we can use it to help Cubby's trust of truth conde alive. It is fine to protect him against shameful feelings about his body by getting to him first with good feelings about it: before chance talk or others can contaminate his ideas. _

oe o oo»

IT IS JUST as fine to get to a child first with the word the world uses to describe what is une true. Were I Cubby’s mother, I would take no chances on his hearing ugly talk about “dirty liars” that might make him feel too wicked for

I would jst as soon that I was the first person to define the word “lie” to my child. I would want to define it in such a way as to accomplish two ends: I would want to insulate it as well as possible against fear aad shame. I would want to expose a lie as a thief of Cubby's happiness.

WHEN I had given him ‘he frank, honest name for the untruth he had told me, I would point out how the truth, instead of the lie, might have produced that lunch at Bill's house. I would say, “If you had told me how much you wanted to stay at Bill's house for lunch, I would have telephoned his mother and asked her to invite you. I could have gone shopping - alone, if you had told me the truth, So, you see . how unkind this lie has been to you. Next time, trust the truth—and see what happens!” oS Ob

:

CUBBY won't stop telling us lies because we call them ‘imagination.” He will learn to tell the truth when we are successful in exposing falsehood as a complicated, inefficient, lonely way to solve his problems.
