'Fireworks' Still Awaited

United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Dec.5—The clos|ing of two Broadway attractions recently sent the 1951.52 theatrical season into its second semester with 21 attractions on display and show people wonder-
ing to start. ’ Although business was inexplicably off some during November, which should have been a top: month, actuglly the activity during the first six months— June 1 through Nov. 30~—has been almost at the pace of the same period a year ago. This year, 29 productions offered'since June 1 achieved 1255 performances as of last night. In 1950 the figures were 31 pro-| ductions and 1275 performances. | The difference chiefly seems | to be that last fall there were] several items that had aroused
whereas the current list, although | it includes some new shows that! are selling out, hasn't been of the type to generate much ex-|
|citement, {

A few earned back a little of their| production costs but Devertheless) wound up well in the red...
Six Show Promise
Of the new shows, these are go-| ing ahead at the pace of hits and) “|have reasonable expectations of | staying long enough to make a| profit: “Top Banana,” “The Four- | poster,” “Saint Joan,” “Two On the Aisle,” “Remains to Be Seen,” and “Paint Your Wagon.” In addition such limited-engage-ment, special-event entertain-| ments as the Jose Greco Spanish | ballet and the “Don Juan in Hell”| reading are definite moneymakers, Among outstanding December entries will he new plays by 8Such| veterans as Elmer Rice, George Ss. Kaufman, Paul Osborn, Shake-| speare and Bernard Shaw. { The latter two already are] assured of success since the 16- | week engagement by Sir Laurence Olivier and his wife, Vivien Leigh,| in Shaw's “Caesar and Cleopatra’ | and Shakespeare's “Anthony and Cleopatra,” played on alternate nights, will be sold out before the opening Dec, 19.
