The Lungfish Can Go Longer Without Water Than A Herd Of Camels Et

CHAPTER SIX

By ROY CHAPMAN ANDREWS

Noted Naturalist and Explorer ONE OF THE ‘most remarkable creatures in the world is the lungfish

(Protopterus) which looks

like an eel and lives much like any other fish except that it must rise to the surface to breathe,

But during the annual dry season of the tropics, it demonstrates its extraordinary abilities, If it is trapped in a swamp by the recession of water, it burrows into the ground. It covers itself with a cocoon of dried slime, secreted by its skin glands, which completely envelopes the body except at the mouth, This prevents the moisture in the body from drying out completely. As the water disappears, the fish rolls itself in a

NOTE: This is the last of a series about thw strange protective and offensive devices nature has given her creatures. These articles are from the recent book, NATURE'S WAYS. In the hard mud the creature is as effectively imprisoned as though it were buried in cement, yet it can live there from one to five years. The lungfish is literally a “living fossil”-—~the survivor of an incredibly. ancient group common in the fresh waters of the Paleozoic continents .two hundred million years ago. It is an example of “arrested develgpment.” Some time long ago, when the waters of the earth were receding, it started to change from an aquatic creature to a land creature. But having found a way to exist despite the absence of water, it stopped changing

between creature living in the water when there was water, hibernating in the mud when necessary. There are only three representatives of the group -— one each in Australia, South Amer-

v‘ean, Africa.

The Collapsible Toad

A STRANGE, weird-looking creature is’ the hermit spade-

. foot when you turn him out of

his ground burrow. , At first sight he seems to be a small, brown ball of earth, But almost immediately air is expelled from the lungs so that his sides collapse. Two elevations rise from the smaller end and 'become staring eyes of such a brilliant gold | color that they seem wholly out of place in such a dusky. surrounding. Awkward hands are lifted one at a time and rubbed over the eyes.

The spade-foot, now quite

. creep away

tecting himself. - He does not stealthily, as do many of the toads, or startle you with. a prodigious leap; instead, he begins. sinking out-of sight..in the soft earth and in less time than it takes to tell, he has wholly disappeared from view. . If the earth is removed carefully. from. over him,” we find him cozily settled in his usual hibernating position. His head

is bent downward so that his

chin rests en his front feet, his

legs are tucked closely under

him, his eyes are shut, and his sides are pushed out because of the expansion of the lungs within.

If he is taken out and put on some solid ‘substance, and finds that digging efforts are unavail-

ing, he creeps stealthily forward or hops in regular-toad fashion

for a short distance and then

tries again to dig a burrow in which to hide.

The. hermit spade-foot is not well known: It burrows into the ground and sleeps days or weeks, perhaps years, at a time.

The mystery surounding the life: | of a spade-foot is increased by the fact that he is wholly no¢-

turnal in habit. The hermit spade-foot is found in every part of the United States. ; END OF SERIES RE 1951, by Crown Publishers,
