: ‘Wholesale’ H. S. Diploma Plan Opposed

Indianapolis high school prin-

cipals Monday will protest a tate plan to issue diplomas wholesale” to non-graduates. The educators, who » reached their decision -at a high school principal's conference, will register their protests at a hearing to be held on the proposal ad ihced by Wilbur Young, State Superintendent of Public® Instruction.

They also. will strengthen their stand by placing their views before the superintendent prior to the hearing and writing - letters of protest. The Indiana School Board's Association yesterday went on ecord as opposed to Mr. Young's plan. He has suggested high °& school diplomas be issued to any wiult who can pass the United States Armed Forces Institute test. Representatives of the assoclation also .plan to voice objections at Monday's hearing. Indianapolis school officials pointed out a plan already exists for awarding high school education equivalency certificates based on tests administered by the school system. The diploma, however, is reserved for those who have completed a prescribed fourvear course of study in a regular high school institution. Delegates to the School Board's Association meeting held in the Claypool Hotel yesterday said the diploma mill plan would lower the standards which govern their issue. They also contended the proposal would discourage pupils from earning diplomas through regular class attendance. At the close of yesterday's association sessions, John L. Bloxome, superintendent of Terre Haute schools, was elected president and was awarded an honor certificate as the state’s outstand-| ing school board member. The award was presented by Gov. Sehricker. Other officers elected were Car-| lvle Mutshler, Nappanee, vice] president, and Dr. Maurice Stap-| ley, Bloomington, re-elected ex-| ecutive secretary.
