State Files More Suits in Tax Cases

The state kept up its battle with tax dodgers and chiselers, today bv preparing new court suits against Hoosiers who have failed to pay their Indiana gross income tax. Deputy Attorney General Robert Wallace, who smacked tax dodgers with legal action several months ago, came back again] with 45 more suits against delinquent taxpayers in Indianapolis, Decatur, Elkhart, Frankfort. LaPorte, Michigan City, New Castle, Richmond and Warsaw. According to James Probst, director of the Gross Income Tax Division, Mr. Wallace will file the first suits in Indianapolis and follow “as quickly as possible” with suits in the other communities, The majority of court action suits will be against taxpayers

iwho have previously ignored the

state’s inquiries. Suits previously filed. - and under which the department has been granted a judgment and which have not been paid. will be carried further to garnishment proceedings .the first step in attaching part of the persons salary. Mr. Propst suggested that delinquent taxpayers avoid paying, the additional penalty and, ings terest by contacting the department immediately for the purpose of arranging some sort of settlement. The tax crackdown began several months ago under the direction of State Revenue Commissioner Conn J. Sterling, who also established the department's special delinquent tax collection division.
