We, the Women—
Praise Wife the Same as Secretary
By RUTH MILLETT IVE business and profes-
sional men were discussing their secretaries and
all of them were bragging about what a jewel he had. There was one moaning about the lame-brain he had had just hired, but kept up his part of the boasting by saying what a whizz his last secretary had been and how everything had been in a mess since she left. The praise was lavish. The appreciation was earnest. And the discussion ended by one man’s saying: “Well, I tell you it’s mighty hard to find a really good secretary -— and you' ve found one you're a suck-
once
er if you don't hold on to her. 1 alway give mine a raise before she gets around to asking for it. I don’t want anyone hiring
her away from me.” It's a pity men don't take that attitude toward their wives. A man
will marvel at the way an inexperienced secretary after years of holding down a joh, get so
competent that she could almost run his business for him.
Ruth Millett

But not many men ever stop to marvel at how after a few years of marriage his wife has managed to acquire all the skills required to run a home and keep a family healthy and happy. And while a man with a competent secretary is wise enough to know that it behooves him to keep her happy, the same man may never have thought in such terms about his wife. Why this is so is hard to figure out. I doubt if even the secretary who marries the boss has ever been able to explain it—once she gave up the job of secretary to become an unsung housewife.
