Their quarterback, Burt Britzman, called a fine game and did some excellent passing to keep is team threatening up until the final gun sounded. Undoubtedly the key play of the came for us came late in the fourth quarter when it was a fourth down situation. John Lattner went back into deep punt formation and, after making a good fake at kicking the ball, he passed to End Jim Mutscheller for a first down.
” ” » FROM THIS spot Notre Dame went on to score the vital marker which evened things up. It was the first time we had used this nlay and Lattner proved his outstanding competitiveness by coolly carrying out his most important assignment of a very, busy day.

ing book completed hig college career without ever having thrown a scoring pass against Tennessee, It is apparent that the General has done one of his greatest jobs this fall and to him go our sincere congratulations for once again doing so much to elevate the coaching profession in the eyes of all Americans. I am sure that perhaps his most pléasant moment of the entire season came when his team stopped the Wildcats on the one-foot line to keep their goal line uncrossed. Upset of the day -honors go to Californians Pappy Waldorf and Red Sanders who conspired to confuse the Pacific Coast Conference picture. Waldorf's Bears knocked Stanford from the unbeaten ranks white Sander's UCLA team upset Southern California. Penn also caused a mild upset by beat-
ing Cornell in their traditional clash, Top teams ‘which completed
their season with perfect records were Princeton, Michigan State and Maryland. Charlie Caldwell, Biggie Munn and Jim Tatum are
to be congratulated for doing such fine jobs, once again. = = = BOWL BOUND Illinois was
not to be denied by an inspired Northwestern team and Ray, Eliot's lads edged out the Wildcats 3 to 0. It was Eliot's first win over Northwestern's Bob] Voights which must have made | victory doubly enjovable for the Illinois mentor.

Four Indiana high school teams were undefeated and untied during the 1951 season. They were Central of South Bend, undisputed champion of northern Indiana; Richmond, a well-coached, clever aggregation fro the eastern part of the state; Winchester High School, ancther team fron
eastern Indiana, afd Linton, which comes from the west-
ern séction of the state, long famous for powerful gridiron teams of ‘championship caliber. «The championship of southern Indiana goes to Bosse High School of Evansville, winner of the SIAC grid title. However, Rosse was twice tied and lost a game to Manual of Louisville, Ky. Bosse played a ten-game schedule. » » » IN SELECTING an team, the strength of the opponents played by dhe better teams of the state must: be given full consideration. For years the toughest high school football teams have as a rule been located in the northwestern part of Indiana. This was again true during the season which closed Thanksgiving Day. Central High School of ‘South Bend is given two places on the first All-State. The other seven positions. are awarded teams in all sections of Indiana. Central won the eastern section championship and then defeated Eme:>25 to 12, for the undisputed title of northern Indiana. These Central Bears played a 10game schedule, the limit under the Indiana High School Athletic Association rule. The only other undefeated team that played a 10game schedule was Linton, champions of the Wabash Valley which includes western Indiana and eastern Illinois.

EIGHT OF Linton's games were with Indiana schools and two with teams from Illinois. The Miners piled up 382 points to their opponents’ 83. Richmond scored 28 which included victories over Broad Ripple and Technical of Indianapolis by oné-sided scores. Broad Ripple is one of the few teams to score against Richmond. Winchester, in eight games, piled up a total of 333 to 43. On The Indianapolis Times first All-State team this year seven

Chicago team and Wayne Glassman, La Porte, star of one of the best teams in the state, would be the best pair of ends. Glassman plaved both end and half back during the season. Bob Springer, star end on both offense and defense for the Cathedral
team of Indianapolis, which lost only to Noll of Hammond named on the secopd al]-State
and is without question one of the best wingmen in anv high school lineup. Rich Stiga, Whiting, proved to be a powerful blocker, strong on defense as well as a good ball handler on forward passes. He would team well with Springer. Cathedral star responsible for many scores made by the Indianapolis team. With this strong backs who can block, carry the ball are necessary. There are so many first class backfield men this year that it is difficult to pick the best. None can beat William Murakowski, Washington of East Chicago, as a blocker and defensive player. Murakowski, a great competitor runs, punts and passes and scored ten touchdowns against some of the strongest teams in the state. He is six feet tall and weights 192 pounds and deserves the fullback position.
