gastronomical lines during the past few days, may we say

that our meni of classical

Thanksgiving week has consisted of an excellent serving of

x grand opera for.our entree, with a tasty assortment of pop- concert favorites for dessért, ‘Even without side-dishes, it's a diet that gives us plenty of musical vitamins, Here are the ingredients: =" = ~ WAGNER: DIE WALKURE, Act IIT complete, in a Columbia box album (SL-116) of two 12inch long-playing records, with the entire libretto in both German and English. To indicate how good it is, we need only say that it is a complete recording of the Bayreuth Festival . Performance of Aug. 12, 1951, Wagnerites who yearned to, but could not, be at the famous Baypeuth, Germany, Festpielhaus during the past summer, can hear an actual Festival performance on these records. The latter bear the stamp of approval of Wolfgang and Wieland Wagner, grandsons of the composer and artistic directors. of the Festival, which was resumed for the first time since 1944. The exacting role of Brunnhilde is capably sung by soprano Astrid Varnay. Baritone Sigurd Bjorling is Wotan, and soprano Leonie Rysanek is Sieglinde. The accompanying cast of leading European Wagnerian singers, the chorus and the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra are under the baton of the dynamic Herbert von Karajan. Miss Varnay; Metropolitan Opera soprano, was the first Amerjcan to sing Brunnhilde at Bayreuth in the 75-year history of the Festival. ° (Columbia will release shortly a second Bayreuth Festival set, a complete recording of “Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg.”)

" = = GOUNOD: FAUST A Metro-

the complete libretto. in French and English. This is the dramatic, melodic grand opera in which the smooth, satanic Mephistopheles does his dirty work with the handsome young Faust and the beautiful, trusting Marguerite, The title role of Faust is sung by Eugene Conley, tenor, while Eleanor Steber, soprano, is Marguerite. Two sensational new singers at the Met, basso Cesare Siepi and baritone Frank Guarrera, sing the roles of Mephistopheles and Valentine respectively. Thelma Votipka is Marthe, and Lawrence Davidson is Wagner. These outstanding opera singers are supported by the chorus and orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera Association: and what makes it all jell into the notable performance that it is, is the baton magic of the incomparable Fausto
