Yank Pilot Writes of Jet Battle—

| Held the Trigger Down, and Did He Light Up!’

rirst Lt. Douglas K. Evans of Washington, D. C., 26-year-old Sabrejet pilot, shot down twe Russian-built MIG-15 jets last month. The first, officially scored as a “probable” kill, was bagged on Oct. 2. His account of this action, in a letter written to his wife, Lucille, is the most vivid firsthand story of a jet battle we have seen. It is printed below just as Lt. Evans wrote it.

OF Oct. 2, got on afternoon . mission as element leader with a good buddy on my wing. We drove up to Sinanju and— as many MIGs called — we dropped tanks. My right tank hung so I jammed in right rudder and it popped off. (I found it put a hole in my wing.) As the flight leader hung up, he and his wing man peeled off. I pulled up on the lead flight to form a six-ship and after a right turn I covered the left side. Then the whole squadron broke right with no -call and I saw a flock of MIGs diving into us from one o'clock high and they went roaring by as we wheeled right. I intended to keep with the other four guys, as I looked back for my wing man, I saw him spinning down like a top. I thought “Holy cow, Chardie’s bought the farm!" I thought those damn MIGs had done a quick job on him As we had broken right, I'd noticed some of the MIGs had pulled almost straight up over us—they were pulling streamers off their wing tips—above 30.000 feet. Some aircraft! 1 called Charlie and he said he was OK. Then recovered as I followed him down, and as I was behind him, I told him to turn left and- tack onto me.

= «Tn I TURNED and then saw four MIGs on our left. and

A ROSE IS A ROSE—Ladies attending, th

really tightened the turn and Charlie said he didn't have me. I looked back and couldn't see him anywhere. I immediately started gyrating around like mad and Charlie said he was leaving the area—a good idea. I thought I'd stick around a few more moments as my area was too cluttered with MIGs and fights to dive away. = I saw two MIGs diving across my front, but above me, so I pulled up steep and took a 90degree deflection burst at the leader and then went on my back and pulled down. I then felt I'd overstayed myself while alone and, diving to pick up departure speed, I headed south at about 25,000 feet. Suddenly I saw three sweptwing jobs about 10,000 feet beJow and in front going my way —-MIGs. Looking around like mad, T went over and down in a terrific dive at 100 per cent (my usual per cent when alone in MIG Alley). = = = I WENT OVER the mach (safe speed limit) and gave it trim to level out be=ind. these guys. Slightly too much trim and damn near went thru the bottom of the ship. I figured these guys would see me coming and when they broke I'd just dive away for home. But they didn't break! I just bored up their rumps. IT felt a certain buck fever and wanted to shoot, but kept saying to myself, “Make damn sure they're MIGs." I closed in and positively identified the T-tails and midwings and spanned on the No. 3 man. A short burst and hits. The jerk never moved and I then held the trigger down gteady and did that bastard light up! Flashes and puffs and hunks coming off. 1 was’ so amazed at really

New Trade Ban ‘Mostly Political’

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (UP) President Truman's order wiping out all trade concessions to Russia and Poland and banning importation of seven of their furs has more political than economic importance, government economists said today. ‘ They said U. 8. trade with those two Iron Curtain countries already is down to a trickle. But the order. they added, will point up to the entire world the split between the United States and the Reds. It ends the anomaly, they said, of the Soviet Union and its satellites enjoying ‘most favored nation” treatment in trade with this country, while at the same time they were trying to undermine this nation and its friends,

Like sawing wood, 1 just sat behind him (I was trying to do everything at once and didn't span much) and clobbered him all over as my nose moved around. = = = I FELT I was going to overshoot him as I had a hell of a lot more speed and I could just see me sailing in front of them. I popped my brakes and continued sitting and knocking flashes off him. His whole tail pipe turned gold and spurted flame. rurrs of smoke off ls ruselage and he snapped left to upright. I lost sight of the other two MIGs. I guess they pulled away in a split—I'm not too sure. F noticed I was dragging back and remembered to pull in my brakes. I fired another long one and he snapped on his back. and seemed to hang there puffing smoke. . Then I feit two heavy jolts to my ship and I thought, “Those guys are shooting at me.” I hated to leave but I knew I'd been concentrating on that guy too long, so I split-s’ed into another mach-plus dive from 15,000, looking behind and jigging my ship like mad. 1 saw nothing and pulled out at 5000
