Lord for the way my life has been straightened out this week.”

R. V. Edwards, traffic superintendent at Harris Transfer Co. in Birmingham, Ala., called Newton

for work Monday.

“Everybody here is happy that you can come back,” he said. “It

difference to us that you have been a fugitive for all these years.” Newton was picked up in Birmingham Nov. 1 as he went to ° purchase ‘a farm for his family with $16,000 he had saved during the years he was a fugitive from the Georgia chain gang. He walked away from a group of* convicts in 1937 just four weeks after he had been sentenced

he vowed he did not commit.

Newton went to Birmingham where he changed his name and took a job as a truck driver, He served with the infantry during World War II, was wounded twice and awarded the bronze star.

Connally Not Pleased

The expectation is that Gen. Clark's tracked somehow by the Senate Foreign Relations Committeee headed by Sen. Tom Connally (D. Tex.) — who is not pleaged with the nomination. Sen. Connally, who is up for reelection in Texas next year, is one lawmaker who can speak out against Gen. Clark without getting into a religious controversy. This traces to Gen. Clark's World War II leadership of the 36th Division. made up largely of Texans, which suffered heavy casualties during the ill-fated Rapido River crossing in Italy. Sen. Connally has promised full hearings on the Gen. Clark nomination, This is regarded by some of Mr. Truman's advisers as a threat to draw out the hearings on the Rapido River issue.
