swerved to ‘Avoid School Bus—
‘Woman Balks at Traffic Fine, Faces Jail Term
By United Press . «GRANTS, N, M, Nov. voung. Chicago mother today faced the prospect of a county jail term and temporary loss of her tow children forsrefusal to pay a $25 traffic fine. Mrs. Deirdre Jerger, 21, blonde and attractive, and her children, Tuzo, 4, a boy, and Tia, an 18-month-old girl, were held in cus-
tody in a ‘motor court. Mrs. Jerger, a model ‘and former actress, said she swerved her car to avoid a head-on col-
lision with a loaded school bus. Justice of the Peace H. N. Rice fined her $25 and $11 in costs for driving on the wrong side of the road.
via ghsurd,” she stormed. “I
wrecked my car to Keep from!
. busload of children, myself ‘and my two children, ana both’ I and the bus driver get fined. There's no justice here.” Tells Her Not to Pay She said her husband had telephoned her from Chicago not to pay the Tine. Her husband, Wilbur, . of the Northwestern University Traffic Institute, said at Chicago that he had turned the matter over to his lawyer. He spent most of Thanksgiving Day making long distance telephone calls protesting the fine in conversations with Mr. Rice and other authorities here. “This is an outrage,” said Mr. Jerger, who once was a candidate for the California legisla ) ‘She’s a heroine for saving the lives of 20 school children.” Boulder Stops Car Mr. Jerger said his wife's car and trailer, in which she and the children were driving from Los Angeles to Chicago, were saved from plunging into a ravine w hen a wheel caught on a boulder. Mr. Rice said he fined Mrs. Jerger under a New Mexico law
requiring ‘‘both‘lines of traffic to stop for a school bus.” He said she admitted driving on the
rong side of the road "because;
she could not stop and didn't want to .hit the bus.” Mr. Rice said Mrs. Jerger would be committed to the county jail at Las Lunas if she persists in refusing to pay the fine. He said her children would be taken ‘as wards of the state.”
