were overloaded with costumes, mirrors and other gewgaws, but deficient in meaning. This year, costumes, routines, lighting and exuberant sweep of young skaters all add up to good sense. And such innovations as dialog, done over mikes by the vocalists with the orchestra, for a big number like the “Hansel and Gretel” conclusion of Act I, point the way to still more fun and good sense. Miss Scott does thrilling skating in solo spots, with terrific twirls. She also does nice ‘ingenue acting in “Hansel and Gretel.” She's altogether fascinating and charming, in her deceptively fragile, platinum blonde way. Off stage, you'd think she was just a shy little high school sophomore. On stage, she does athletic feats that would make strong men] turn pale. Carol Lynne, dark haired and taller than Miss Scott, is an; astounding skater. With grace and good stage sense she combines immense facility for wild tricks like doing the ballet splits in mid-air. Andra McLaughlin, pert and cute, does the Charleston, softshoe and jitterbug routines on

skates, plus an excellent hula Last night she drew huge applause.
Leads Male Contingent Michael Kirby, veteran of previous Ice Revues, leads this year’s male contingent. Mike has more scope for his iquite excellent stuff, and seems better integrated into the show than last year. He has height and looks and a personality that evidently doesn’t clash with others. More spectacular than Mr. Kiri bv are performers like Skippy Baxter, Calvin Cook and, of | course. Freddie Trenkler. Skippy Baxter's back flip is something vou have to see to believe, and then vou think you need new glasses. Calvin Cook, on those suicidal stilts, flings partner Jean around in a way no man should treat a woman. Trenkler in Spotlight | Freddie Trenkler is better than ever, with some new stuff that really hits the crowd. Like every other veteran in the show, he seems more carefree and happy than in previous vears. With him, the Three Bruises: Geoffe Stevens, Monty Stott and Sid Spalding, contrive some of the best nonsense ever done on ice. With a word of mention for John Walsh, doing excellent work as the Sorcerer in the big Haiti number in Act II, this review also must praise Paul van Loan, music director and conductor. Mr. van Loan has produced scores for previous editions of the show, but has not always enjoyed freedom of ideas in the final version.

In an Area of Stresses—.
Malta Ranked
By HAROLD GUARD United Press Staff Correspondent VALLETTA, Malta, Nov. 22This tiny, war-scarred Mediterranean i'sland threatened two years ago to quit the British Empire and hoist the American Flag. Now it is. ranked by service chiefs of the Atlantic alliance as the pivot of the southern flank ‘in European defense. It is not difficult to understand, even on a flying visit to this island which has been a British outpost since 1814, why Malta must assume great strategic significance, It lies in an area of new international stresses resulting from Egypt's abrogation of. her treaty with Britain. Through Malta pass the western allies’ sea and air communications with most parts of the Commonwealth and the Far East. In the concept of naval and air strategy, the little island becomes virtually the gateway from the west to India- "and Pakistan and to the vast continent of Africa.
No Crisis Seen
Malta does not look like a colony on the verge of a financial and perhdps a constitutional precipice, which Maltese opinion claims it is. In 1947 Malta was given selfgovernment through a legislative assembly of 40 members headed by Prime Minister Paul Boffa, who went to London to put the island's case to the colonial office. He returned to tell his parliament that the island, which was presented with the George Cross in recognition of the loyalty of its people during the war, could expect no financial aid irom Britain and no share in Marshall plan aid. Disappointment stirred up latent discontent and a rebel element led by a former deputy prime minister, Dominic Mintoff, threatened to haul down the Union Jack and hoist the Stars and Stripes.
Orders Rescinded
Then both Mr. Boffa and Mr. Mintoff went to London. The British government rescind orders for the discharge of some 1200

which, the Maltese said, was aggravating the crisis in the insland.
The British government gave
Malta £30,000,000 for war damage repairs, £2,720,000 for food supplies and development purposes and £120,000 for Malta University. These (unds have brought what the Maltese describe as ‘‘superficial” full employment for the colony's 315,000 population, which works out at something like 3000 § to the square mile. The naval dock yard at Malta is the principal means of livelihood for the colony, which produces nothing except building stone and a little food.
