The Fight for Survival—
CHAPTER FOUR
: ‘THE BLUFFER’
By ROY CHAPMAN ANDREWS Noted Naturalist apd Explorer
NATURE HAS MADE the gorilla almost a ground- ; living ape. Because of its great weight, the beast
+ cannot easily climb about among tne trees as do the chimpanzee and the orangutang. Therefore it spends much of its time on all fours, like a huge baboon in the thick vegetation of the African jungle. } The gorilla's long forearms are enormously powerful but its short hind legs are comparative-
ly weak, Nevertheless, it can walk erect and even run for a short distance. The gorilla is a terrifying beast and seems to know it, If an intruder surprises it, the great ape will rise up and pound its breast, growling in a most horrifying manner, and then lunge forward. This seems to he a bluff, for if the enemy does not run, the beast often stops short, drops to the ground, and moves away. The big ape has few natural enemies, for any other animal would think twice before comIng within range of the powerful arms and long canine teeth, Even a lion might emerge second-best in a fight with a full-grown gorilla. The popular legend of native women being carried off by gorillas is pure fantasy.

He won the Medal of Honor.

so firmly attached to their mother's pouch that they cannot be shaken loose. Later, when they attain a coating of hair, théy continue to occupy the pouch until they become too large for it. Then they crawl out and cluster all over their mother’s body, hangIng onto her thick fur with their little feet. There is a widespread belief that the mother arches her tail over her back like a rail and than the young ride “picaback.” hanging onto it with their little
prehensile tails. Probably this does happen at times, but cer: tainly it is very rare. An opossum, especially when climbing about among the branches, is constantly using its tail as a balance and would be hindered greatly by having a family attached to it Opossums are rather moving, stupid animals which seek safety by their retiring. nocturnal habits and non-resist-ance to enemies. It is because of this last trait that the fami-

If one tries to raise him and put him on his feet, he will show not the slightest signs of life. Opossums are the only American members of the ancient order of marsupials, the pouch" animals, that live in Australasia. In the New England states they seem to be working their way farther northward every year, and now are found as far up as Vermont, Next Sunday: The armored tank and the camouflage that

Two men, nine boys and three
teen-aged girls have been arrested. District, Attorney Harlan

cause of a “breakdown” in sex morality which he .said had pro-

disgusting” involving
the
situation “from some of best families.” “Instead of being masculine and interested in football” he said “they (the voungsters) speak like girls and are interested in embroidery and raising flowers. “I think it’s another indication that the young people look today for new and different thrills. Most of them, however, are not criminals. They will require hospital treatment rather than confinement in penitentiaries.” He said ‘‘one ‘or two people” were responsible for introducing perversion into the community. “It spread like dope,” he said. Two men and three 17-year-old boys were charged yesterday with moral offenses. Mr. Kelley said four other 15-year-old boys have admitted perversion in addition. He said two 15-year-old boys and three teenaged girls would be brought into
juvenile court soon on sex charges.
