Don’t Deceive That Child About Adopted Status
By MURIEL LAWRENCE Mr. and Mrs. White haveidecided. They have just taken the final step that will transfer a baby girl, sleeping in the adoption agency's nursery, to the pink crib waiting for her in the Whites’ suburban home. Mrs. White looks at the agency executive a little nervously. “When,” she asks, “do I have to tell Marian that she is an adopted child?” “1 suggest that you begin to tell her today,’ the social worker tells her

FOR A moment, Mrs.
Whi ebels. She had thought 12 I i finally come to terms t physical disability that prevents her from conceiving children But now, suddenly at this last moment
Muriel Lawrence the old resentment, the old fur
humiliation rises up. During the past weeks, she has been thinking of herself as the mother of the delicious morsel in the nursery down the hall: She does not relish this reminder that she is not the woman who begot it. “Marian is only 6 months old” uneasily, “Surely, I can postpone .,.

glad I am to have you! If you will become acquainted with this word ‘adopted,’ using it lovingly, with the respect and pride it deserves, vou will associate it with love, respect and pride for Marian, until it becomes as familiar, consoling and warm to her as the milk in her bottle , . ." Mrs. White accepts this wise counsel. As she grows used to the phrase “my darling little adopted baby,” she will begin herself to associate it with respongive gurgles, with a wet, milky mouth, with all ‘the joy of her experience. Her old resentment and humiliation at being unable to bear a child will lose their power to hurt her, The physical deficiency of which she has been ashamed will become the benefit that brought her Marian.
QUITE suddenly, one day, Mrs. White finds that she is no longer jealous of the.fruitfuiness of her child's natural mother. When this happens. she is ready to take the next step in helping her little daughter to understand and accept her adoptive status. Marian's understanding of it is geared to an understanding of her origin. She needs early sex instruction that will dispel confusion about the act of the natural parents that gave her physical life and the Whites’ act that gave her emotional life. Dorothea P. Coe, executive secretary of New York's Spence Chapin Adoption Service, sums up the problem thus: “Adoption is something to share with the child. His true and lasting satisfaction is your love. Take pride in Si gift of
love and he will take pride in it, too.”
