Blackwood on Bridge—
Straight Jump
Played in a ten table pair game, only two pairs reached the laydown game at no trump on the North-South cards in this hand.
At most tables the bidding
was as shown. What was wrong”? ; Well, at the start it must be, admitted that certain distributions of the adverse cards would make game impossible, However, 1 believe that most players--except the most con gervative would want to take
their chances on nine tricks at
no trump, " ” ” "A PRINCIPLE is involved in the Bidding of the hand which seems to he widely known, And yet, for some unexplainabla reason, this principle Is not practiced even by many who profess to know it. One of the pairs which got to the game bid as follows:
will meet at 8 p.

Place Refrigerator Away From Heat
When choosing a spot in your kitchen for your refrigerator, keep in mind that it will do its best work if it is not given the additional burden of combatting exterior. heat from radiators, hot-air register or range Remember also to allow 18 inches of open space above the refrigerator to allow escape of rising heat.

If you're planning to bake a coffee cake as a surprise for Christmas brunch, make it quickly by the muffin method so that you'll have time to join in the holiday fun. Sprinkle an unusual Coconut Lemon Topping evenly over the coffee cake batter in nine-inch layer pan. Then, with floured fingertip, press a star design deeply into the coffee cake. Bake in moderately hot oven {400°F.) about 25 minutes. To make the Coconut Lemon Topping, combine one tablespoon sugar. and three tablespoons enriched- flour, Cut or rub inj two tablespoong butter or Ro Sane until mixture is crumbly. reached, but it seems to meé there was a simpler and easier sequence available. This is what I mean: North: one no trump: South, three no trump. This is not as fancy as the bidding shown above but it is just as sound and it doesn’t take up so much time.
= v ~” THE PLAYER who opened the North hand with ene no trump reasoned in this manner. If he opened with one diamond and partner responded one no trump, he would not have quite enough to raise to two no trump. And yet he would feel that he had extra values which would never be divulged if he passed. If, over a one diamond opening, South bid one heart or one spade, North had too little to jump to two no trump and too much to rebid one no trump. Why trap yourself in a asituation like that? This North found an easy way to avoid the trap, He opened one no trump, telling the whole story about his hand in one short phrase. After, that, It was up to partner,
