Pattern Counters Offer Vital Hints on Fall Winter Styles
By DEE KAY How You'll Look This Winter”
line in a current woman's magazine. less with delight when I saw how stunning I would be.
ERE'S
There were only two little drawbacks.
“doesn't conform to those of the « svelte models and my budget . doesnt stretch to include the
© elegant originals they wore.
Being of the cunning type, 1
+ left the open magazine where
my husband wauld see it and ayearn for a bonus so his wife
«,could have at least part of such :*a high fashion fall wardrobe.
* He yearned, all right! “Honey, why don't vou take
* off a few pounds so you won't :«bulge in that nice navy blue « suit you got last year?”
~ ” 5 I PRODDED him with: “But wearing that style has to be red wool, imported tyveeds, banker gray flannel, velvet dotted surah or hammered satin—and crinoline petticoats, of course; to make the skirts stand out.” “Your skirts stand out fine, honey, with your built-in hoops. You'd be caught dead in a revolving door if you wore crinoline skirts, too.” = ~ » IGNORING HIS too candid estimate of my charms, 1 rose to the full height of my comfortable matron type figure and thrust the magazine toward his obviously near-sighted eyes: “Here's How I'll Look This Fall —that’s what it says, isn't it? Now, do something about it.” He did. Next day, I received a copy of the new McCall's Complete Book of Dressmaking. He expressed tender sentiments on the card that came with the gift. “Here's the book. You got a sewing machine, Go to it, Glamour Girl.” Resentfully, I opened the book muttering things like “. champagne on a beer income . « the por man’s Maggi McNellis . . . Schiaparelli alias Singer ..."” 2 = = A GLANCE AT THE table of contents left me wuimoved. “Dressmaking Made Easy.” Ha, you can't fool me because my few creditable efforts along those stylish lines cost me a pint of plasma through my finger tips and kept the house in a turmoil fora week.
read the headL was speech-

into chapters on taking it easy and taking your time. Facts on thread and fabrics. 2 The big section for me began with instructions on how to take your measurements and then adjust a pattern to your own size. Who cares (besides me) if I'm not the perfect model size? Nobody's perfect and now I can make the dressmaker’s average smoothly cover all
of my figure faults.
= » = AFTER SAMPLING sections on cutting, marking, preliminary fitting and putting together, I dashed into the finishing touches. Fascinating—and so simple when you read directions written down to my level instead of terse comments that only a tailor could understand. But the best was yet to come -—an encyclopedia on how-to-do everything from buttons and bands to lingerie strap holders and tucks and tailoring. All kinds of embroidery and hand work, too. I rushed off to put my new knowledge to test on my prize bugabooa zipper. It turned out so well that I had to build a laundry bag around my trial run of a
used fastener and remnant material. ” » 2 DID I mention there are
more than 700 how-to drawings in the book? And loads of photographs and full colar illustrations to make me wonder if even I won't be able to get out of the beginners’ class. I checked the book. Yes, they agreed. The magazine noted that these divine originals could be copied at home from similar patterns. = = = I HAUNTED the pattern counters and then used my new knowledge to pick out some new and exciting materials. And I found out that dressmaking can be easy and doesn’t need to upset the whole family. By the way. my husband got that bonus. I got mine, too, when he said I looked like $1,000,000, all for his $3.95 in-
