Personal memories of playing against Connie Mack, Charley Comiskey and other greats of | ald baseball died here today with Adam E. Kiefer. Mr. Kiefer, 88, was one of the first professional baseball players in the U. 8. He drifted among several teams in leagués which later formed the nucleus of to-! day's majors. ; “Keif,” as hé was called. later coached sandlot teams here and] helped develop a fellow named Ownie Bush. Mr. Kiefer often recalled that Ownie was worried about being too small to reach] bigtime. ‘Ownie Was Fast’ i He was a runt, but plenty fast ind hit often, so we helped him] along,” Mr. Kiefer would say.| Ownie put in 14 Vears”as a big] league shortstop, later managed teams, and now. i$ president of the| Indianapolis Indians. | “Kief” started playing pro ball about 1886 and kept at it for 10 years. Mack and Comiskey were among mustached oldtimers he played against in leagues in the East, Midwest and Florida. He also played semipro for the Indianapolis Eagles. The ‘veteran catcher recalled that-in these days nobody used a glove for the hard rubber ball And a batter was allowed eight strikes or 12 balls. Worked for Waverly Co. After putting away his mitt, Mr. Kiefer worked for 35 years at the Waverly Electric Co. here, formerly the Waverly Bicycle Co.

He was in charge of the drill press

department, working on electric! autos. He later worked for the city and retired 10 years ago. Mr. Kiefer had been living recently with his daughter, Mrs. Margaret Alandt, 5115 Maple Lane. Also surviving are his wife, Clara, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services will be at 8:30 a. m. Saturday from Grinsteiner’'s Funeral Home to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 9. Burial will be In St. Joseph's Cemetery.

State Budget Group OKs IU Building Plan

The State Budget Cbmmittee yesterday approved advertising for bids for construction of a $3.7 million life science building at Indiana University. The committee also authorized receiving of bids for a $400,000 store and service building and $125,000 in employees’ housing at Central State Hospital here, authorized the Ft. Wayne State School to - make architectural plans for a $500,000 personnel building, and authorized $11,000 in architect fees for a $400,000 Indiana National Guard warehouse here.
