WASHINGTON," Nov. — High-ranking American officials saw no ‘prospect today that the United States . could meet Iran's urgent request for a $120 million loan to bolster ‘its economy. < "-A loan that size, ‘they said, could be provided only by Congress, which will not return to work until January, Without Congressional action, they said, the government does not have enough

less stodgy than the Ensemble Society usually has asked for, the quartet introduced one fairly modern work, Roy Harris’ Three Variations on a Theme for String Quartet (1933). * For Mr. Harris and for 1933, it's a rather neat blend of conservative principles with modern ideas. The full effect of the nice writing in it probably wouldn't percolate through most of our minds without frequent repetition.
Seek Modern Music
Considering the date of the composition, that indicates Iserious cultural lag —more serious in music than in other arts where chicness and connoisseurship count for more. “uriously enough, there's a demand for modern music — for material not {m= mediately obvious—on the part of the great public. Supply and demand never get together on the same plane of seriousness.
Mr. Harris’ 1933 writing 1or string quartet is good stuff, but astringent for first hearing. People like some astringency, as witness their packing the "Murat twice for George Shearing last Thursday. The gap between Roy Harris and George Shearing is not so (tremendous as might be assumed. If people had enough opportunity to hear something like Mr. Harris’ Three Variations
more. often, they'd get to like it.|
Even Mr. Shearing would admit Mr. Harris has something comparatively terrific in the way of ideas.
Sponsored Contests
Fortunately, the Ensemble Music Society and their guest artists for the past couple of seasons have done substantial things to increase interest in chamber music and build a young audience. The society has sponsored ensemble contests in the schools, under the general supervision of Ralph Wright, music director of the school system. This year, the society has gone farther. With admirable co-opera-
tion from Broadus Erie and Mathew Raimondi, violinist; Walter Trampler, violist, and
Claus Adam, cellist, the society { has scheduled four high school concerts by the New Music String Quartet, There were concerts

and theré will be concerts tomorrow at Manual and Washington. To me, that seems the biggest] news about this wisit of these ex-| cellent musicians. Personally, I can take chamber music or let it alone. I. would like to hear it, even or especially last night's fine version of the Haydn B minor Quartet, Op. 64, No. 2 (not too often played), while I'm working. Chamber music is the most marvelous accompaniment for waxing a floor, running a wash or cleaning a stove. That way, it sinks into your brain. I say that not to disparage last night's concert, but rather to call a attention again to our local radio desert. Won't some sponsors decide a 10-hour stretch of good music, with brief commercials, is. worth while daily? The quartet's program also included a stately and beautiful Fantazia for Viols, by the musical
giant of Elizabethan England, Henry Purcell, and Verdi's E minor Quartet (1873), a fluent
and nicely contrapuntal work of the Italian master’s late maturity.
