Airman (Simulated)
By Scriops-Howard Newspapers It has been proved possible for a man to be blown from an altitude of 8000 feet to eight miles in one fifteen-thousandth of a second without {ll effect on the body. Although the actual test was a simulated one in a compression chamber, the Air Force officer who acted as a human guinea pig experienced the same reactions as he would had he actually been blown that far. The test. staged In the AeroMedical Laboratory of the Air De velopment Force (ADF), is described bv a North American Aviation Co. representative who witnessed it, The ADF is a branch of the Air “Research and Development Command. headed by Gen. Earle E. Partridge. It is conducting numerous tests to make supersonic flying safe for U. 8. air-
Col. H. M., (Mike) Sweeney dressed in the latest-type Air Force pressurized suit, took his place in a compression chamber. On the seat of his pants was a patch of strong wrapping paper. All eyes of onlookers focused on that patch. A test engineer tolled off the steadily rising altitude— 25.000 .... 35,000 . .. 40,000 feet. Raising his right hand as a signal, Col. Sweeney then plunged a sharp-pointed screw driver through the paper patch, instantly depressurizing the suit. ;
Then It Was Over
“ne f + ’ a The effect of this simple move
ment was, for a moment, hideaus.” onlonkers reported. “His eves hulged and strained at the sockets, his entire fare twisted g7ntesquely and an involuntary Fasp war forced through tortured lips. And then it wax all over No damage had been done.’ Aeron Medics representatives said the test proved that if an airplane's pressurized cabin should spring a leak or be punctured by enemy gunfire. such a puncture would not mean death for the man or men involved. It was another test in a series for the Aero Medics men, whose main goal is survival of United States airmen under all conditions of flight, regardless of speed and altitude.

Ejection Neat Tested
Another was the development of the pilot ejection seat. The seat first was attached to a pair of rails running 100 feet straight up. A powder charge gave the seat a “kick in the pants” equivalent to the discharge of an artillery shell. Mike Sween2y tried the seat and proved that a human could survive a shock of 33 Gs (35 times the pull of gravity on his body). When a new supersonic, experimental plane takes off for its first flight at Edwards Air Fores Base, Muroe, Cal, the test pilot knows exactly what to don if anything untoward happens. And the Aero-Medica know that if he follows the rules laid down by their exhaustive tests. he will
