ELEMENTARY schools now . lack 20,000 teachers. Next vear the figure will soar to 50,000,” she says, She feels that this is * because salary increases in the teaching profession have not kept pace with those in other

agandizing pressure groups which are launching planned campaigns to undermine faith in the public schools and to weaken them through loss of support,” she added.

- = » THE aim of these groups, according to Mrs. Hayes, Is to gain control of the schools for selfish or partisan purposes. It is up to the citizens of the country to make it clear to the school boards that they are willing to pay more taxes to secure best possible training in public schools,” she said. American Education Week is sponsored by the United States Office of Education, the National Education Association and the American Legion.

: Branch, American Association of University Women. L. Albert Wilson will address the group on “If You Want an Education,” at the dinner meeting at 6:30 p. m. Tues-

North and South Find a Good Fitting Hand

Finding a good fit with your partner in one or more suits is a very valuable asset. Good fitting hands will usually take more tricks than much stronger hands which are “‘non-fitters.” . But you can carry everything too far as North and South did in today’s deal The first two rounds of bidding were normal enough, but North elected not to hold still for the two club contract. Playing match point duplicate, he decided to try to get into a major contract and bid two hearts on three to the nine spot.

Now South really fell ip love with his hand. His er had bid clubs in ch he held five

cards with-three honors. His partpér had also bid spades covering his doubleton. Now if

there was also a heart fit, what was he waiting for? .... He bid game in hearts and the roof fell in.

his lone heart, South played low and here West made a fine deceptive play. He won with the QUEEN of hearts, giving the impression that the 10 was in the East hand. South went for it, hook. line and sinker. He ruffed the dia“mond return and led the seven of . hearts, believing the suit would break West this with the 10 of hearts. He laid down the

ace 3 2d king of hearts, taking aecifer last ones. A diamond.lead then put East in to run the rest of that suit. When the smoke cleared away the contract was down six, 1700 points. North could have made two clubs on the hand and while this result would have been something short of spectacular, at least it would have been on the “right” side of the score sheet.

Drying Clothes

It's poor policy to “bone-dry” clothes in an electric dryer. Overdoing this particular phase of the laundry is likely to result in harsh, stiff fabrics, curled selvage edges and non-maximum absorption in such materials as terry cloth.
