An Oakland butcher, whose mother lives in the Chinese village of Eunew, said he had sent $12,000 Hong Kong money to keep his mother from being killed. The demand was made by the Communists on trumped charges that his grandfather had once donated money for construction of a Nationalist Chinese school in Eunew. He said they arrested his mother and promised her release only if he paid the requested sum. Mr. Kai-yu said requests for money started arriving here last March, but that little attention was paid to them at that time. The number and amount of demands increased in recent months, he said.
New Racket “Most of the demands are made | for past taxes, rentals or ‘contributions’ that the relatives in
China are unable to pay,” according to Chinese Vice-Consul Dershing- Liang. (United Press staff correspondent Victor Kendrick reported from Hong Kong that the ransom racket was launched there more than six months ago. Mr. Kendrick said the Reds were also attempting to get ransom money from overseas Chinese throughout southeast Asia.)
