Mexico to Avoid Tax Bite

RENO, Nev., Nov. 9—The bookmaking experiment, “Opera.isa Nevada establishments today, but | business dropped off steadily as horse players discovered they, couldn't cope with the new 10 per; cent federal tax on betting. As one horse player put it: “I used to lose only $10, but now 1! lose $11 betting on the same races.” The Sierra Turf Club, one of the two legal bookmaking establishments in the U, 8. trying to operate under the new tax, admitted its business was falling off steadily, “The horse players are discov. ering they can't buck the 10 per cent levy and come out on top,” co-owner Jimmy O'Keefe la mented. “Most of the steady players are heading for Tijuana in Mexico. We understand the bookie joints down there aro Jammed.”

Bets Are Smaller The big money bettors have almost faded out of the picture and only an occasional bet of $10 or more moved across the windows. Most of the bets are $2 or less, Mr. O'Keefe said Long shots are getting bigger play, Mr. O'Keefe reported, with the customers figuring they can beat the new tax by getting a winner with a big price. The club collects an extra 10 cents for Uncle Sam for every dollar bet. “Even 80,” Mr. O'Keefe reported, “the horse players aren't grumbling as much as might be expected. We're. going to keep running as long as we have cus-tomers--we aren't going to give up yet." Couldn't Absorb It

gambling are legal — was the

Stockmen's Hotel in Elko Owner R. C. (Red) Ellis said, “We're just going along until we make up our minds what to do. We just want to see what's going to happen.” The rest of the bookmakers in Reno and Las Vegas remained closed but kept a close watch on the two operators still in business,
