Ask Recounts

In Close Races

Republicans won the mayoralty races in 72 Hoosier cities last Tuesday, but some of their margins were so close recounts might

cut sharply into that figure.

The GOP candidates won at least 12 of their mayor seats by majorities of 100 votes or less,| the margins ranging down 1o three votes, and the Democrat losers either had filed or planned] to file for recounts in several

instances.

Democratic winners won by, fewer than 100 votes in seven] cities, but the only recount shap-| ing up was at Terre Haute, where! John Ennis refused to give up his| bid for mayor on the basis of | returns . showing Mayor Ralph| Tucker triumphed by 54 votes in| a race that drew nearly 25,000

ballots. Mayor Russell Coons, D., Rush-

ville, filed a recount petition in an|

effort to reverse results showing William Winship, R., the winner ‘by 38 votes. Mr. Coons claimed one precinct didn't report until 1:30 a. m. and it gave Mr. Winship the margin of victory.

Loses by Six Votes

R. W. Cook, D., who lost by six votes in the Montpelier mayor race, said he would file for a recount. Clyde Smith, R., was the winner. Recount talk also was heard at Mitchell, where Roy F. Ira, D., lost by three votes to Lyle Root, R.; at Lawrenceburg, where Louis Liddle, D., lost by 23 to Theodore Fitch, R.; at Linton, where P. H. O’Hern, D., lost by 34 votes to Robert McFadden, R., and Huntington, where Homer Webster, D., lost by 70 votes to Carl Rudicel, R. At Ft. Wayne, Democratic Party leaders were” uncertain whether to ask a new count in Paul M. Burns’ race with, former mayor Harry W. Baals for mayor, Mr. Burns lost by 262 votes and said he'd let his party decide whether to ask for a recount. Republicans also won by narrow margins the mayor races in Bluffton, South Bend, Bicknell, Franklin, Mt. Vernon, Rochester, Shirley City and Winchestet.
