Indiana Will Seek New OPS Tax Rule
Gov. Schricker said today Indiana officials will seek a “new interpretation” of a federal price! stabilization order to prevent food buyers from paying merchants’ state taxes. The Governor's office was trying to arrange a Nov. 13 conference in Washington between state officials and OPS Chief Michael DiSalle to discuss the order. No Indiana merchants are adding their gross income taxes onto ceiling prices at present, according to reports. given Gov. Schricker, and if they do, the {Governor said they might well expect customer resistance. He said food buyers might logically refuse to pay the tax— 2; cents on each $4 purchase— on grounds the tax cannot be passed on under state law, The Governor met with state revenue board members and representatives of chain stores and retailers this morning to discuss the forthcoming conference! with Mr. DiSalle. Representatives of the merchants said they are against the OPS order, too.
