BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Nov. {—The chairman of the University of Indjana's athletic committee said today he didn’t think the school has any-
one in mind to replace head foot-|
ball coach Clyde Smith who resigned yesterday under fire.
Professor John Mee said “our
minds are completely open on the
subject.” “I'm just as surprised as everybody else.” Mee said.
u = n { THE COMMITTEE will hold its
next regular meeting Nov. 16, at which time the coaching problem will be brought up. Campus speculators, meanwhile, offered the names of least three coaches as possible =successors to Smith. They included former IU star Chuck Bennett, now a coach at Lagrange, Ill; Northwestern University Assistant Johnny Kovatch, former IU
at
end coach, and Pete Rucinsky veteran high school coach at East Chicago, Ind., Roosevelt All three also were mentioned
before Smith was selected to’ succeed Alvin N. (Bo) McMillin in 1948.
= = a SMITH SUBMITTED his resignation, effective the end of this
"season, to Atnietic Director Paul
J. (Pooch) Harrell. The Hoosiers have three games left—Minnesota, Michigan State and Purdue. Smith has received strong criticism from university students and alumni groups. Last month unidentified students distributed mimeographed pamphlets asking: “What's Wrong With Our Football Team?” Alumni leaders in Chicago also have said they weren't satisfied with Smith's coaching job but previously indicated they were going to wait until the season's end “to see how his record looked then.”
= La = SINCE HE became coach three years ago Smith's teams have totaled eight victories against 2 defeats and one tie. Smith broke the news to his Hoosiers during afternoon practice. It came as a shock to his players. “I can hardly believe it.” said Senior Tackle Ed Roth. “If this is the truth I am glad this is my last year of football.”
= = = I. U. PRESIDENT Herman B Wells praised Smith and said the coach had “worked very hard” to develop the school’s football program. “We are sorry to him leave us and students, the facuilty, alumni and friends of the university ‘wish him the very best in all of his future undertakings,” Wells said. Smith had shrugged off earlier criticism. of his coaching record. He said he expected it because he was a coach and added “we have a young team and have made a lot of mistakes.” However, the critical fire aroused his squad. They fought back to upset top-rated Ohio State, 32 to 10, in one of the season's major upsets. Since then the Hoosiers have lost to Illinois and Wisconsin for a conference record of one win against three losses.
have
Smith said he had no future plans. “I have had no offers and am
not interested in any right now. I'm not making any plans until after our last game.” Smith said he resigned ‘because I wanted to, and that’s all there is to it.” He made no other comment.

Thus, a 50.0 team has 10 scoring points stronger thap a 40.0 team on their comparative records, in which average scoring margin has been weighed against average rating of opposition. However, this does not mean that a 50.0 team should de feat a 40.0 team by 10 points in the future, because the ratings have not been adjusted for such important forecasting factors as home team advantage, injuries, lineup changes, ete. How's a football team find the snow? Well, it's tough sledding in practice. Ask Butler. The Bulldogs were chased inside yesterday. Snow and rain didn't mix well with a “T” formation. It was the first indoor workout the Bulldogs since the season opened Unless the weather lifts Butler will have to face Washington in St. Louis Saturday without any real workouts. Only today and tomorrow are left for practice.
