strument,

Sevitzky starts this program with the newly rediscovered “Youth Symphony” of Rachmaninoff. This fragmentary early [vork, a first movement and a |scherzo, has some of the compos{er's individuality and some interesting. even daring, experimentation, like the stark passage for brasses toward the end of the first movement.

A Bit Drawn Out The scherzo, which gives solo flute almost as much work as! Mendelssohn's “Midsumme r| Night's Dream” scherzo, is pleasant but a bit long drawn out. Byron Hester, the new solo flut-! ist, did fine playing in it. After intermission, Dr. Sevit-| zky introduced another work, the| Gretchaninoff “Triptique, Petite | Suite” for strings and harp.

| The chief. virtue of this work,

|

gg Which is little more startling than

the average product of Ethelbert {Nevin and Charles Wakefield Cadman, yesterday seemed to be the opportunity it gave the strings {to sound beautiful. It also gave {Mary Spalding some good licks, on the harp.

Superb Accompiniivent |

Dr. Sevitzky and the orchestra {having done a superb accompani- | ment for Mr. Ricci in the Sibelius {Concerto, went on to even more (astonishing playing in the Elgar Variations. I had forgotten that

the Brabms-and-sweet-vermoath mixture that was Elgar's idiom could sound so impressive. And I hadn't noticed before that noisy Variation"VII may very well have inspired the fourth movement of the’ Shostakovich Fifth Symphony. § In Variation IX, the Brahmsian tear-jerker, and the magnificent though redundant finale, Dr. Sevitzky did some of his finest interpreting. Elsewhere in the Va-| riations, he was aided by some ex‘ceHent solo work by Fernando Cortellini, the new first violinist, and ‘Jerome Carrington, first cellist.

. Percussion and brass departments also rate high mention for their work in this quite 'sensational performance of a work that sometimes can seem stuffy.
