Don't ever let your affections stray toward a rubber plant, unless you're prepared for all sorts of complications. Such as never being able to vacation with your husband (or wife, as the case may be). On the other hand, when Mildred and William Kaeser, 316 8. Audubon Rd., view the one-man show, largely plant pictures, that he's having Nov. 19 to 30 in the Hoosier Salon
Gallery in the State Life Buflding, they'll thank that rubber plant. It started a lot of paintings when Mr. K. first painted it, the Kaesers' first house plant, It started some 300 other plants, too, of many kinds, that now deck every room in the Kaeser's attractive home. To date, his paintings, many of them plants his wife has raised, have appeared in longhaired art exhibits and won prizes all over the country, This past month Flower Grower ran a story by Mrs. K, about Mr. K., his Paintings and her plants, . One of his pictures, titled The Green Thumb, inspired visitors to the International Flower Show in New York last March. Probably few of even the greenest thumbed recog-

nized the tall-leaved plant with the bright red flowers. It's one of the .greenhouse subjects that thrive in ordinary living room conditions under Mrs. K's thumb and Mr, K.'s artist eye. It's’ a billbergia. In its native land {t requires a tree to hang on. But Mrs. K. has argued it into not only growing but .blooming in an ordinary flower pot. Others of her masterpieces are the bird of paradise plants she raised from seed. “They adjust better to household conditions than plants brought in full-grown.” The way the plants inspire Mr. Kaeser is really quite simplé..As he sees it, it goes this way. She says, “Oh, isn't this pretty.” “This” can be just a beautifully textured leaf, “I look.” says Mr. K. “Then I really begin to see it. Then I want to paint it." As to the problems, says Mrs. Kaeser, "Nobody's temperamental around this house except the plants" But there's that business about vacations. Someone always has to stay home to take care of the 200 or 300 plants. (It's 300 until they begin tossing out some of the less-loved in the interests of house room.) Then there are little difficulties like the philodendron vine
ors toe, which add comfort last indefinitely, Pattern 2995 includes complete crocheting instructions, material requirements, stitch {llustrations and finishing direc-

Naturally I had to ask Mrs. Kaeser what her advice would be for other house planters— especially those struggling with weak-constitutioned
a lone specimen or two. Biggest point, she’s found. is right soil. “My own plants were pretty indifferent at first, Then there was the Biggest change when I learned how to mix soil and what different kinds of plants liked.”
Not all will thrive with the
same soil. A general purpose mixture does for many of them though. She mixes up half topsoil, a fourth peat moss, a fourth sand and adds a teaspoon of garden chemical fertilizer and a teaspoon of bone meal to each six-inch pot full. Then she gives cow manure to all those that like it. And after two months in their new soil mixture they get weekly doses of cow manure in solution. Even her cactus plants get {t—in summer when they're growing fast. Other pointers — wash the leaves off once a week with clear water. Don't fertilize a sick plant. That's just about all there is to inspiring your husband to win prizes with a green thumb,

Frank Habig Jr. thinks I'm far too enthusiastic about ground corncob mulch. I'm not fair to peat moss, he opines, and it's time peat moss got its due. Ground cobs, says he, don't begin to absorb the moisture peat moss will. Then there's the mouse problem. They hustle to set up housekeeping close to grains of corn that even the best shelling doesn’t get rid of. He then told me the romantic
