THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES
By ANDY OLOFSON Times Staff Writer . . ENGLISH, Ind., Nov. 3—S8chool children are learning their three R's in a converted chicken house in. the wild, scenic topsy-turvy-land of nearby Johnson Township. And the 36 pupils must lug their own water supply-each day. The ‘water from the well at the “school” has been condemned as unfit for human consumption
But the beaming youngsters think they're lucky. They think they have the finest one-room
schoolhouse in Crawford County a view shared by many officials. The hen-house school situation is the result of the still-unex-plained burning of two of the township's three. one-room school hoyses this fall. Everyone agrees the fires were set deliberately. Whodunnit and why? Those are just two more unanswered questions to be added to the mystery-laden saga of Crawford County. Strange things have been happending in this southern Indiana hill ccuntr? for years—fires, killings, disappearances, Few ever have been explained. So it is with the schoolhouse fires that came 24 hours apart as the new school year was to start in 8eptember. ' Officials suspect the blazes were set by disgruntled

Mr. Speedy tried.to rent several vacant business buildings in Eckerty. Insurance men refused. to cover the buildings, since school-house-burning seemed in. such vogue. Then Therral Norman came to the rescue. He had just completed a 48x16 - foot concrete block building, intended originally for raising chickens. He offered the building for a temporary schoolhouse. The windows provide adequate light for the poultry world, but the interior is a bit dim for educational purposes. There is one big electric bulb at one end of the room. A large pot-bellied stove in the center provides the heat. When The Times visited the school, the regular teacher, Paul Speédy. cousin of the trustee, was playing hookey — hunting deer. But W. A. Dillard, his predecessor as teacher a year ago, was filling in. . It's Better
Genial Mr. Dillard said frankly the hen-house school was superior to the now-destroved Conner School where he taught last year, The pupils unanimously agreed, The township trustee, however, ruefully admits the school problem is a big headache. “We thought about consolidating Johnson, Patoka and Union Townships and building a combined school,” he said. “But officials tell us that we still cannot raise enough money in the three townships to meet today's building costs.” The hen-house is temporary Mr. Speedy said. But he could give no, idea when or how other arrangements could be made. < He said no one from the office of state superintendent of public Instruction had been down to help counsel the worried township officials. y
