viva in “Figaro” and as the Sprecher in “Flute.” Baritone Erich Kunz, noted for his Mozart interpretations, sings the role of Figaro in that opera, and Papageno in “Flute.” Susanna in “Figaro” and Pamina in “Flute” are sung by the noted soprano, Irmgard Seefried. Other fine voices heard in the two operas are those of sopranos Sena Jurinac, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and Wilma Lipp, contralto Elizabeth Hongen, tenor Anton Dermota. and basso Ludwig Weber: Vitality of performance and perfection of recording make both operas a delight to hear. “The Marriage of Figaro” is Columbia set SL-114, and “The Magic Flute” is set SI-115. Of course, there are numerous other excellent classical records besides the operas coming along, and among them are: i
FLAT MAJOR for Piano and Strings (Op. 44), played by Clifford Curzon, piaro, with the! Budapest String Quartet, on the! two sides of Columbia 12-inch LP record MIL-4426. This is Schumann’s masterpiece in the sphere of chamber music. It is admired for its brilliant imagination and innate power, - plus gorgeous beauty of sound. The prominence accorded the piano throughout is characteristic of Schumann's chamber music, as it was his favorite instrument. JENNIE TOUREL, glamorous i mezzo-soprano of the Metropoli- | tan Opera, sings “Russian Songs” ‘on one side'of Columbia 10-inch LP record ML-2198, and the other side “Spanish and Portuguese Songs.” Miss Tourel, a great favorite in Indianapolis, will be admired for the versatility and mu-| sicianship she displays in her interpretations of these foreign songs. There are six characteristically Russian or Spanish-Portu-guese songs in each group. George Reeves is at the piano. CHOPIN: SONATA NO. 3 in B Minor (Op. 58), played by Rudolf Firkusny, piano, on the two 10-inch sides of Columbia LP record ML-2201.. Chopin, one of ithe most remarkable creative geniuses in musical history, was in failing health and spending the summer of 1844 with George Sand at her estate, when he composed this famous sonata. It is a work of breadth and fire, to which Firkusny does full justice. RAVEL: QUARTET in F MAJOR, ‘played by The Juilliard String Quartet, on the two 10inch sides of Columbia LP record
