1574 hands, It Was more champagne than has been sipped at a capital party in a long time. It was more handshaking than a Princess should have to do. But the British Embassy wanted to do it up in fitting royal fashion when it threw a reception yesterday - for Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh. It succeeded. Just to give

the proper .in-

troductory touch of royal pagean-

try, seven trumpeteers at the Embassy gate heralded the entrance couple. Then for

minute recess for tea—Elizabeth and Phjlip stoéd in a marblepillared ballroom to greet the guests. For most, the royal presentation- meant only a touch of the hand, a warm smile, and a murmured, “How do you do?” Then the guests moved on into a heated tent in the embassy gardens where . liveried waiters passed out imported champagne,

scotch, bourbon and fruit juice, and canapes of ham, chicken, cheese, - pate de foie gras and caviar. Almost all of official and diplomatic Washington was there

plus a lot of people who seldom invited - to such an affair. By royal request, British Ambassador Sir Oliver and - Lady Franks invited persons considered representative of some life in the United States.” The guests ranged from George C. Marshall “to Scout Walter Beach, garet Truman to Washington Baseball Club Owner Clark Griffith, from Soviet Ambassador

The Little Men Who Weren't There...

By EDWIN A. LAHEY .. Times Specla! Writer WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (CDN)-~Members of Congress

were ostentatiously absent from .

the big reception for Elizabeth and Philip atthe British Embassy. It seems that the British age good enough to- appropriite money Yor, but not worth the political risk of standing in line two hours to shake thé wellmanicured hands of the princess and her consort.

Only nine of .the 96 members | of the Senate were counted in |

the reception line, and percentagewise, probably fewer members of the House appeared nt the big reception for the visiting royal couple.

| ‘Senate showed up than have been

seen together at one time since Congress adjourned. Many turned from their home districts for the occasion. Rep. John E. Rankin (D. Miss.), who has often twisted the tail of the British was there When asked whether he enjoyed meeting her royal he

The ostensible reason for the absence of Congressmen and” Senators at the. reception was that they had all gone home, to git up with their taxpaying constituents as the new rates went into effect Nov. 1 : Senators noted in the reception line with their wives were Flanders of Vermont, O'Mahoney pf Wyoming, Johnston of Colorado, Johnston of South Carolina, Chaves of New Mexico, Kefauver of Tennessee, Kilgore of West Virginia, Cain of Washington, and Anderson of New Mexico. |
