Info Navy Ensign Declared - Dead in Action

ported missing. In a. letter to his parents, the Navy says the ship was struck Oct, 1, 1950. An immediate explosion blew many of the men into the water and completely demolished the entire forward section of the Magpie.

Ship Was Near Shore

From letters received from 11 of the 12 survivors and from officers of two naval ships in the area, his parents have learned) that Ens. Langwell was on the bridge at the time of the explosion. The ship was near shore. Other Hoosiers who were reported missing following the dis-| aster include Stanley Louis Calhoun- Jr, Dunkirk; Richard D. Scott, Peru; and Norman Dowell, New Albany. Ens. Langwell served in the Navy for two years during World War II. Sixteen months of that time he was a radio operator assigned to Pearl Harbor. He received a reserve commission in April, 1950 and volunteered for active service in August of that year. He was flown to Guam and assigned to the minesweeper. At the time he re-entered service he was an investigator for the Retail Credit Co., Inc. He was a graduate of Technical High School and Indiana University and was a member of the Southport Masonic lodge. His parents, live at 1544! Powell St. !

Eugene Rarey, La Fountaine| rarmer, is seeking a Superior Court 5 judgment against Morton | Ol Co., Inc., 3804 N. Illinois St. + The complaint charged his 3-month-old daughter, Melanie, was, willed and his wife, Donnie, and J-year-old son, Kyle, seriously hurt in a crash with an oil truck, driven-by an employee of the com: | pany. The accident occured Aug. 4, 1950, at an intersection two miles east of Leisure, Ind. The suit| said Mrs. Rarey’s car was hurtled 150 feet into a school yard. : Mr. Rarey is seeking awards of $75,000 for his wife's injuries, $45,000 for his son and $25,000 for his daughter's death. |
