Protests Still Mounting

By United Press Protestant. congregations in many parts of the nation celebrated “Reformation with public protests over the proposed appointment of the first U S. ambassador to the Vatican The Protestants yesterday heard denunciations from against President Truman's proposal to send Gen. Mark W. Clark to the Vatican center of the Roman Catholic faith. The Nationa! Association of Evangelicals said notices were sent to some [000 churches across the nation to take part in the mass demonstrations. The NAE said $500,000 whrth of air time was used for additional protests over radio church programs The St. louis Church Federation prepared 10.000 ,postcards assailing the appointment. The cards, addressed to President Truman, were distributed at a mass meeting.

Leaflets Quoted

The federation also distributed leaflets - which read: “The President has made our government clearly partisan to the Roman Catholic Church ~~. . Rev. Dr. Robert J. McCracken minister of the non-denomination Protestant Riverside Church in New York charged that “Roman Catholicism making an .open bid ‘for power and dominance in this country.” “Protestants are bound to view this. with alarm,” he said, ‘“be-

'¢ : Dr. Edward Hughes Pruden, President Truman's pastor at the First Baptist Church in Washjngton, said the’ appointment was “creating a sense of division at a time when we urgently need to be united.” Dr. Pruden, who took part in .a round-table discussion with two other-prominent Washington Protestant clergymen, said he was unimpressed with the argument that - diplomatic relations are necessary with the Vatican. “Vatican officials already are as near our present ambassador to Italy as the nearest telephone,” he said.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 29 (UP) A movie director decided today that what Hollywood-—-and mankind -—needed are more ‘virile” glamour girls.

Joe Newman, ace movie-maker at 20th Century Fox studio, added hastily thal he

doesn’t mean masculine, : “By virile I mean actresses who are aggressive, animal and interesting,” he explained. He figures most movie queens are so sweet-and-passive that love scenes in the: cinema have lost that breakfast food pop-and crackle. ; “In fact,” he said, “you could say that in life there are .two types of women. One is the lie-back-and-purr type. She's sweet but a little uninspired. Girls of this school might be Jeanne Crain, Ann Blyth, Myrna Loy and go forth. “Then the seeond type the kind that puts the motion in motion pictures. She's more sexual ‘and more interesting.”
