Airplane More Speed
By Seripps-Howard Newspapers A giant “cocktail shaker,” suction wings on porous planes, and submarine-type periscopes for long-range airplanes offer the latest innovations in aircraft and
. guided missile development.
Speed—and more speed—is posing added problems of vibration, strength of material and navigation. Ingenious inventions are solving them.
. The “cocktail shaker'—a vibration test tower 40 feet high and 15 feet square—is being used at Bell Aircraft, Buffalo. It subjects aircraft and guided “missile parts weighing up to 3000 pounds to stresses -and strains simulating supersonic speed flight at high altitudes. Informatioh obtained in the pretesting gives engineers data that will prevent stfuctural failures at high altitudes ‘and high speeds. It is said ta, be particularly vital in the guided missile ground-to-ground program .which has been speeded up ten-fold.
Wing Drag Reduced
Suctipn wings made of porous metal fsurfaces which suck the outside air into the wing while in fast flight have been tested and flown. in England. _As present-day aircraft fly, a very thin layer of air nearest the surface of the wing tends to become turbulent and causes drag
i (a slowing up of the aircraft).
The suction wing removes this “boundary layer” of air, British engineers say, and stops turbulence. If proved successful on the wings, they add, the porous metal mhy be applied to whole aircraft. “Aircraft of the future may the engineers report, ‘and a plane may fly a quarter as far again on the same amount of fuel.” The® turbulence « problem. on supersonic aircraft and missiles
is being approached from many
different angles by the U. 8S. Na< tional Advisory Committee Aor

One is the “drag” caused. by the astrodome sticking up in the airflow and spoiling the streamlining. Tre other -is safety. In 1949, a u. plane flying the Atlantic lost tts
