SUNDAY, OCT. 2 1951 Sounds and Looks Netier—
~. Symphony’s Opening Concert Draws Praise
The Symphony's brought two big ovations.
Qne was for Fabien Sevitzky and thé orchestra After their magnificent performance of the Brahms Fourth
Symphony. . The other was /for composer Frederick Piket after the Symphony’'s expert handling of his difficult and fascinating Concerto for Orchestra. This year's Indianapolis Symphony sounds better than jin previous seasons. It even looks better on the Murat stage. A coat of blue-gray paint on the familiar set helps. So does a white overhead fluorescent glow instead of the old lights, one of which used to blink on and off with each tympani fusillade,. Dr. Sevitzky- opened his gram with the Bach-Sevitsky chorale prelude “Wir glauben all’ an einen Gott,” honoring United Nations Week. Also called the *Glant Fugure,” this piece in the excellent Sevitzky transcription is familiar to Ibcal listeners,

A Happy Choice
A happy choice commemorating the 150th anniversary of Italian opera composér Vincenzo Bellini “Norma” and others) was Bellini's youthful Symphony in D This one-movement, .18th-Century style symphony has extraordinary charm and interest, with its slowtime resemblance to Sibelius and its fast-time similarity to Mendelsson. The orchestra does so well with it, I cduld wish RCA-Victor would put it on a platter. (Incidental plug: A friend back from Honosays serious-music discjockeys over there play a large percentage of Sevitzky-Indianap-olis Symphony recordings. Dr. ‘Sevitzky's interpretation of the Brahms Symphony No. 4 in E Minor was masterful and dra,

Frederfcks Schmitt, first horn, and Jennings Saumenig, a percussionsection Veteran now playing tympani. Another percussion veteran, back from several sedsons with the Boston Symphony, is Victor di Stéfano, busily tinkling triangle throughout the third movement of the Brahms. The program will be repeated at 3 p. m, today. H. B.
Manna From Heaven Might Be Lichen.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 27— The “manna” of the Israelites ‘may have been a species of lichen that still grows on rocks in the mountainous regions of Biblical lands. Blown' loose into the lowlands, it piles up in small hummocks in the valleys. . As ‘late as 1891 there was ‘an abundant fall in Turkey. It still is eaten by the desert tribes. A similar species was used by the ancient Egyptians for making bread; at present it usually is mixed with meal. 3 This curiouss bit of botanical history is revealed by Dr. George A. Llano, former associate curator of cryptogams of the U, S. National Museum, now with the Air Force, in a report of an extensive study of the economic uses of lichens just issued as part of +t nnua! Report of the Smithson’an Institution.
