Rule of 26 Cards Should Guide Bidding
Do you know the rule of terms of 26 cards, not just your eleven? How about Culbertson’'s own 13, Think of your partner's rule of eight, Winslow's rule of hand and your own as one unit. twelve, Courtenay’'s rule of eighteen, Culbertson’s rule of N minus one. THERE ARE many angles to I may as well get in the act this question.. Here is one of too, and I hereby devise the them. Many players, holding a “Rule of 26.” The others are Weak hand, don’t have the imundoubtedly helpful in certain agination to realize how strong situations, and especially the Partner's hand may be. tons, he felt the slam bid was automatic. And he was absolutely. right. ; I am not pointing it out as anything sensational. It stands out. Or it should. But, honestly, out of 100 players, how many do you think would make it? From my observations, a verv small percentage. ~ ” ” MR. MASTERS merely used his imagination. His partner's three spade bid and subsequent fiva diamond bid said this: “Partner, I am willing to contract for eleven tricks, knowing nothing about your hand except that you have four diamonds . .. any four diamonds.” Mr. Masters looked at his
| hand. He had more than four
diamonds. He had five. He had the king of diamonds. Mrs. Keen must have counted on losing a trick to that card and still winning eleven tricks. The queen of clubs was an added value, unknown to Mrs. Keen, As a matter of fact, although she had a fine hand, she had little enough for the kind of bidding she put out. In any case, Mr. Masters was able to throw his losing spade on dummy's fifth club and easily take twelve tricks. West, dealer. East-West vulnerable. Mrs. Keen |
