The Threat to American Sports

This I am pleased to do as I have had an interest in amateur sports for many years and am convinced of the as well as concomitant benefits, Also I see a serious threat to American amateur sports, and if I can add anything to its protection I want to do so. But more about the ivy towers later, and I, as a school superintendent, shall not claim any qualifications as being one who could propose a remedy. NOW WHAT has*heen going on? Well, for a long time there has heen a concerted effort bv colleges to entice athletes to their campuses, If I wanted to be less diplomatic I would say that they have entered the market of athletic ability prepared and willing to pay what competitive bidding made it necessary—they have been buying I support that statement with the following from a New York Times survey. The University of Oklahoma has a Touchdown Club. composed of millionaire alumni who provide 140 athletic scholarships. Twenty are for basketball. These provide full tuition, $15 a month living expenses, room and board. Many athletes hold campus jobs, but the presis dent admits that they don’t work at them. Oklahoma's athletes get free tutoring service while other students pay. Southern Methodist has 154 athletic scholarships and 141 academic scholarships. Of the scholarships 34 are good with average below C if the dean approves. Athletes are housed and fed in a spacious, beautiful dormitory, and if they fail their courses the instructor notifies the Athletic Department and a tutor: is supplied. T can’t see how Southern Methodist could have a deficient athlete with the instructor, tutor, Athletic Department, and dean all against his deficiency. n = ”

UCLA spends three to four thousand dollars to tutor athletes. If these fellows are scholars enough to get scholarships why all the tutoring? North Carolina grants $27.000 to 27 athletic scholarships and $35,000 to the academic needy. Every fourth scholarship at Duke is for an athlete. Every third scholarship at Texas A. & M. i= for an athlete, Kentucky provides 100 athletic scholarships from to full living costs. Same at Tennessee and Alabama.’ Anyone P$hink these are for

Will somebody tell me what Puerto Rico doez to a basketball player that America doesn't do? In 1943 it was decided that the boys were not having enough practice time so they were housed in the YMCA. In 1950 the University took over the vacant Children's Society shelter in Brooklyn to house the players, and installed Coach and Mrs. Clair Bee as house father and mother. Of the 16 major athletes, 10 were in Physical Education courses. The only point I make here is that Coach Bee is Head of tHe Physical Education Department and Vice President of the University. I don't imagine that IL.ong Island's basketball players have many academic troubles. Were I a high school basketball player I would have trouble deciding between Long Island and Southern Methodist. = = n A UNIVERSITY of OKklahoma senior was found to be taking freshman and sophomore courses in swimming, games, and apparatus, theories of basketball and football, first aid, volley ball, wrestling, and boxing.
