Your ‘Take-It-Easy' House—
Keep Your Summer Furniture at
By JOHN PETER ACROSS the land, householders are performing the last rites of summer, ‘Awnings are coming down. Screens are being replaced with storm windows. Summer furniture is being stored away. These rituals mark our final admission that the easy living ways of summer are really over.
Here is expert advice on the
rearrangement of, homes with change of seasons. Most of John Peter's ideas may be adapted for any type of household — bungalow, mansion, apartment or farmhouse. Mr. Peter has been editor of the home living departments of several of the better magazines.
But need they be?
Take a good look at that summer furniture used on lawn or porch; which are about to be put away. Outdoor furniture has changed a good deal in the last few years, Much of-it is made of aluminum tubing with canvas or plastic webbing, wrought iron with .reed, rope and redwood, spring steel and cast aluminum. The cushions are of plastic or
‘and rent.

Aspholt tile looks Fike terrace tile HAVE YOU EVER been tempted to move some of it right into the house instead of storing it away? True, it doesn’t look like the Chippendale or-Sheraton. pieces of grandfather's day. But neither does the store we shop in, the office we work in, nor ‘the car we ride in.
A growing number of Americans are becoming less concerned with making their house look like grandfather's mansion and more concerned about the long hours of grandmother's horse’ and buggy housekeeping, in this modern, hustling age. . ; Some of these people have put their summer furniture to use the rest of the year. Others, especially young ones, have found that summer furniture makes attractive low cost new furnishings for some of the rooms in their home,
Let’s look through the house and see where we can use summer furniture. A natural is the dining room. It is generally a small room. The light, open character of wrought iron furniture makes the room look larger. The glass table top is impossible to stain and easy to clean. » = = A GOOD NUMBER of people are moving their television sets out of the living room and into the dining room. Here, summer, furniture makes cbmfortable, low-cost seating that can take hard wear. In the living room, wrought iron chairs with bright cushions | as “occasionals” bring a summer look to winter rooms. Some of the new ones have flat disc feet which makes them easy on the rugs and floor.
Curved upholstered sectional units fit in front of the fireplace and are lightweight, easy to move. Folding chairs make extra seating when you give a | party. In your bedroom, a glass topped table makes a stylish

rustic pieces are almost ideal for a boy's room. PUT YOUR summer furniture in the basement if you must but don’t store it there. Use it!
With paint, carpentry and imagination you can make part of your basement into one of the easiest living, most enjoyable rooms in the house. With summer furniture as a beginning, you can convert it into a downsfairs “terrace” with television instead of a view. With equal imagination you can furnish a comfortable sewing room with a rattan rug and a radio. Summer furniture “will give any room in your-house a fresh look if you give it a fair chance. Move the old furniture around in a new arrangement. Perhaps some of it should be retired. You may want to redecorate
the room to match the furniture.
or you may wish to slipcover the furniture "to mateh the room. 5 » 8 n SUMMER FURNITURE manufacturers, aware of the bonus values of year round use, have hired top designers from here and abroad to design their new pieces. s This has not prevented som from looking like pretty wild flights of the maker's fancy. Some collapsible chairs have a nasty way of behaving as
- though they were made by
a mousetrap - manufacturer.
~ Others looked eollapsed when
you got them, only they weren't. If you couldn't lure a guest into one of these all summer it is unlikely that you will do any better by bringing it into the house. You might as well store it until next summer or better still, get rid of it. A poor piece of furniture is poor inside the house or out. A good piece of furniture can make your ‘iving easier all over the place.
