Local Bishop Reports— ~~ Hope, Dignity In Reich Today
N ot e — Bishop Richard C. Raines of the Indiana Methodist Area is traveling in Europe
and Asia to study Methodist missions, | By RICHARD C. RAINES i FRANKFORT, ' Germany,
Oct. 20—The difference. between a patient just coming
from the operating room and the same patient three weeks later when he is on the way to recovery describes the contrast between Germany as I saw her three years ago and now. The German people are the strongest potential in Europe, the! key to peace in Europe. They are sturdy, willing and determined - to work and to work hard. The, brick-layers and helpers across thé street from our hotel window are on the job at 7:00 o'clock each mérning. Their’ movements are rapid, energetic and precise. When one sees the terrible results of bombing in Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne and Stuttgart he cannot shake off the" question that yeeps intruding in his mind. Why? want us to remain, at leas

Sermon of the Week—
Scripture: “These things I have written unto you, that ye may know that ye have eternal life, even unto that believe in the name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:13 (revised version).
THE BIBLE emerges through the gloom: In these days of uncertainties among men, days that bring news cf crashing empires, days that bring headlines of new wars and rumors of wars; when seemingly men have reached a new low in immorality, with prisons bulging with men and women who have been ensnared by sin and lawlessness; when the common walk , of life is fraught with failing plans of man for security, social and economical, and when broken family circles in this war-torn age seem to paint life as one “heartbreak ridge,” the assuring message of the Bible emerges through

to possess present peace and the prospect of life eternal. God’s Word provides security since, “He who promised cannot lie.” We are reminded that, “heaven and earth may pass away, but My Words shall not pass away.” The hammers of upbelief are worn and obsolete, bit the anvil of God's infallible Word abides as .a refuge for us in our present day insecurity. Not only ‘does God’s Word promise security, but His finished and completed Worx of redemption offers peace for the present and bright hope for the future. “This is the record that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he hath not the Son of God hath not life.” " Here we see from God's record that eternal life may be enjoyed and presently possessed by all who accept by faith the sacrificial work of Christ.
un n on IT IS ALSO noteworthy that God's will provides security, “for He is not willing that any

should perish.” But in the final analysis, onl§ man’s acceptance of these great eternal truths and provisions will put such- a policy of present peace and eternal life in force for him. And note, this is an individual and personal transaction. As goes the individual, so goes the home. As goes the home so goes the nation.
