American Faces Trial by Swiss As McCarthy ‘Spy’

GENEVA, Oct. 13—A 23-year-old American will be taken from a hospital sickbed here, this weekend. to face a Swiss court Mondav on charges of spying on American diplomats for Sen Joseph McCarthy (R. Wis. yi Charles Davis, a former left wing newspaper correspondent who fell ill of tuberculosis in jail after his arrest by Swiss authorities last November, will go on trial in nearby Lausanne The public trial before a trihunal of five federal judges will he attended by United States consular officials.
Crime Under Code Mr. Davis is charged with being hired in Paris by “one. of MeCarthy's emissaries, John E. Farrand. who instructed him to watch the social relations and contacts of the United States diplomatic and consular staff in Switzerland, and especially Mr. fohn Carter Vincent (former) United States Minister in Berne.” Mr. McCarthy has frequently acousty Mr. Vincent of having Communist sympéthies and of undermining Nationalist China. Mr. Davis is being tried under Article 272 of the Swiss penal code which makes it a ne to; — gather information on political activities of any citizen or resident of Switzerland.
