Jenner, Governor; Halleck, Still Demonstrate Senator Drive Hatched
Despite the increased prestige of the two GOP leaders, there was some talk Congressman Halleck might not want the senatorial nomination because he is assured of a key spot-—either Speaker of the House or Majority Leader— if the Republicans sweep into power in 1952. However, close political friends of his say he has long wanted to jump into the Senate. As for Sen. Jenner, leaders of both parties say he has always wanted to be Governor, In recent months, some opposition has sprung up to his proposed bid for the Governorship, prin\cipally from GOP leaders in the Statehouse. However, with his latest tri~ umph, even this opposition seems to have melted. As one GOP leader said: “It looks like Jenner can write his own ticket.” It- is traditional for both political partfes in Indiana to fill the senate and governor nominations with men from opposite parts of the state. This also fits the proposed Jen-ner-Halleck ticket. Sen. Jenner is from Bedford, the southern part of the state, and Congressman Halleck is from Rensselaer, the northern part.
