| ‘Poet’ Labels Assure Housewife Of Quality Foods
Poet” label on quality foods
.a household word throughout Indiana A unique and far-reaching business transaction was completed late in the life of James Whitcomb Riley when the beloved Hoosier Poet authorized the firm to use his picture and signature on its proposed line of canned foods. In return, Mr. Riley extracted only the promise that nothing but foods “above reproach” would be offered under the label bearing his identity. Through the years the 0'Connor people have kept their bargain. And today the familiar “Hoosier Poet” label is widely respected as a symbol of finest quality. Treasured Record The poet's letter of consent is among the most treasured records of the wholesale grocery firm, located at 600 Kentucky Ave. In the letter, Mr. Riley made this humorous reference He said he was reminded of a ‘tonsorial squib” "he had scen which stated “satisfaction guaranteed or whiskers refunded.” The company continually strives to give complete satisfaction to the consuming public, according, to Roy L. Davidson,
Mark Riley's Birth "The Hoosier Poet label ap‘pears on the firm's line of canned fruits, vegetables, condistaple products. The firm's 75th anniversary observance this week coincides with the 102d anniversary of Mr. Riley's birth last Sunday. Eorn in Greenfield, Whitcomb Riley began contributing poems to Indiana newspapers about 1873. Much of his verse is in the Hoosier dialect: Among his most famous works , are “The Old Swimmin’' Hole and Other Poems.” “Out at Old Aunt Mary's” and “The Little Orphant Annie Book.”
