West Coast ¢ Is Catching Up

By FRANK LEAHY : Saturday's football resuits proved more concretely than could any verbal arguments that West Coast football has completely canght up with the brand of ball being

played in the Midwest and While it is true that Michigan and Minnesota are not as strong as they have been, it is also

true that their conquerors, Stanford and California, have not, as yet, been conceded top honors on the coast. During World War II football ag played on the West Coast was not up ta par for many reasons. Most important of these was the fact that not as many service units supplied material to the far western schools. This meant that when the war ended many of these schools had to start from scratch and it has taken five years to complete the job. This fall it appears as if the Pacific teams will make their best im-. pression on the national scene because there are more well balanced teams in the Coast Con-

CALIFORNIA remains as the class of the Coast, but the Bears reign will be seriously threatened before the season is over as they have yet to play the four leading challengers, Stanford, Southern California, UCLA and Washington. Undefeated Stanford and Southern California appear almost as strong as the Bears and the added incentive of a victory placing them in the Rose Bowl could fire either of these teams to a win. UCLA has two games but they have been to the top contenders in the Southwestern and Big Ten conferences.

Tryouts for the figure-skating team of the United. States in the 1952 Olympics will be in Indianapolis Dec. 21-22. ! Dr.- Paul van B., Allen, Winter Club of Indianapolis president, announced today he had received word the tryouts have' been awarded the blue. The announcement came from the U. 8. Figure Skating Association executive committee meeting in Colorado Springs, Colo. : “It is the highest award that can be given any skating club,” Dr. Allen said. “The Winter Club is proud to be chosen and feels the award is largely due to our
