Head Over Heéls—
Msgr. Sheehy Talks About Money, And Finds That It's Not Evil
CHAPTER MY Better Self warns me, petent than you ‘to give You can’t keep your checking
THREE _ - ‘There is no one more comadvice on money matters. account straight. Let those
who are money-wise advise others how to treat it.”
Fifty years ago a famous
commencement speaker advised college graduates, “Get capital.”
No one would be so bold toRather, one might agree
with Swift, who sald, “A wise
man should have money in his head, not in his heart.” Or with Thoreau, who wrote, “Money is not required to buy one necessity of the soul.” ~Ioney has been the source of much of my priestly worry. Not in what it does or does net do for me but in what it does or may do to those for whom I have some responsibility. A young man who emerges from college with a wrong idea of money may become a menace to the world in which money is the basic form of compensation. If he has the right idea about money, he will “get capital” put his stamp on it, and use what he gains to make _.ife worth living for others, and thus gain Heaven for himself. » » »” ONE DAY a chaplain.in the Pacific saw a group of Marines playing a new game. They had insisted on some pay being given in silver. The game was to see who could make the silver dollar skim further over the ocean until it drobped use-
~--Jessly to ths bottom,
Too many people are afraid
to face the fact: money.” In their failure to do so lies the danger — the danger that greed will turn into perverted desire. The man who says, “I don’t care a hang about money,” may be in the class of one who says, “I don't care what others think of me,” while at the same time he cares much too much. A respectful attitude toward the earning and care of money fits into the integrity of Christian character. Buch an attitude can be summed up in these words: “I want money and will strive honestly to get it because I can use. it for the fuller life for myself and others. I can also give it wings to help peopie toward Heaven.” Avarice, on the other hand, is an insidious disease of the soul which strives, by means or foul, to get wealth because it means unearned power, prestige, and self-glori-fication. 2 The Prodigal Son learned that money cannot buy friends; the gangster learns that fit cannot buy respect; the corrupt politician learns that fit cannot buy peace of soul. The hero of Lost Horizon,
“I want
as he gave up his world for the | monastery said, “What's money |
compared to peace?” And yet money can buy the order needed in one's own life and it may be a factor in
international peace. It. may en-''
sure security for loved ones. It may promote a good cause which otherwise would perish. . As one scans the history of this country, the men of wealth
who * put all their money to
noble service cannot be ignored. Contrast them to. the
jewel - hoarding Oriental -
princes.
» * ” THE EVIL in our day has not been in the possession of money but in those who are possessed by it. Communism is wrong not merely because it is anti-God but because it is anti-money in

FOREWORD: Once in a long time ‘a writer comes along with so deep a faith and so many years of rich experience that he inspires readers, even in the most critical days.
Such a man is Monsignor
Sheehy, head of the Department of Religious Education at Catholic University of America, Washington, D. C, Father Sheehy .served as naval chaplain with rank of eaptain in World War IL. Holds thé bronze medal, six battle stars. These articles are taken from “Head Over Heels, a Guide for the Better Self,” copyright 1951, by Maurice 8. Sheehy with the permission of the publishers, Farrar Straus & Young, Ine. The unusual title, says Monsignor Sheehy, comes from his belief that “God intended that the head should he over the heels, looking upward toward Him and outward toward our neighbor. ”
not seeing how money may serve God. The crooked politician, with his indelicate racketry, the employer who sees the laborer as a tool to make money, the laborer who sees labor merely as a means fo his weekly pay-
x amples fo rationalize the state-
ment, “See how money corrupts!” ! Men corrupt money, not
money men. Judas corrupted thirty pieces of silver. God may best be served in a clean and comfortable home that one calls his own (and that costs money). He may be best worshiped in a church which throws back at Him in beauty something He has given
the earth. fand that costs money). The message of God may be best conveyed in schools where inspired teachers use the best libraries, the best charts, the best books, under healthful conditions, to teach truth— and they cost money!
Once upon a time a young |
man asked me for a loan of a hundred dollars when I'did not have that much money in the
bank. But I gave him some |
good advice about thrift and financial responsibility.
Then he gave me some. “If you haven't a hundred dollars in the bank,” he said, “you should not set yourself up as a financial counselor!”
Perhaps in a commencement address I might disregard his admonition. But I might say: “Get capital—but get it to live; save money because by so doing you may save lives and the things which ensure the better life; stamp each dollar with a grateful prayer and then send it on its way with your blessing.” Then my Better Belf whispers: “Don’t forget to tell them, ‘You can't take it with you! ” Or as Spaniards say, “Shrouds have
no pockets!”
