Hungary has introduced a “power austerity” program bhecause of the serinus shortage of coal, and Communist afficials have issued urgent calls for more workers in every industrial field.

The economic failures in the satellites are, fo rthe most part, in the very fields in which these countries were strongest. Thus, Poland, once a great meat exporter, has no meat. Hungary and Rumania, “bread basket” coun- [ tries, are short of potatoes and now ration bread. Highly in2 dustrialized Czechoslovakia builds & houser without plumbing and has S not enough coal to run its facye tories,

Pieces

Rationing Stricter

In all the satellites food and clothing are rationed much more strictly than in those few western countries which still control sale of consumer goods. In all of them it is a crime for a worker to leave his job or refuse to work at the post assigned to him. In Czechoslovakia, the seriousness of the food situation was fllustrated by death sentences given to three men charged: with forging ration coupons. Czech ¢ housing is now built in two stages. “Luxuries” such as plumbing and staircases will be added to the dwellings in the second stage —at some undisclosed future date. Czech coal production has fallen off to 80 per cent of planned figures, while official figures show almost every industrial sector has YD failed to achieve quotas set under . the five-year plan. .

Great Powers

The situation in Czechoslovakia recently reached such a serious stage that Karol Bacilek, former chairman. of the autonomous flovak cabinet, was named minister for state control afld given unprecedented powers to straighten out the country's economic mess. Three ministers were fired in the shuffie, and five new . ministers for various {industries were created.

Although the Polish Communist regime has not yet taken public action on its crisis, reports from western sources in Warsaw describe the food erisis as the worst since the war. These sources say queues stand before butcher shops and food stores 24 hours a day in the vain hope of getting bare

necessities. : : 5s = - H ¥ 3 d p- J : : : 1 QUICK Corn Pack Up : d : i CHILLER
