La Prensa Editor Given a Special Avword
NEW YORK, Oct. special award leadership in the fight to maintain freedom of the press” was given Dr. “Alberto Gainza Paz, publisher and editor of La Prensa of Buenos Aires, by the export advertising association yesterday. The award was presented at
* the aksociation’s opening Ilunch-
eon of its third international advertising convention in¢the Plaza Hotel, attended by some 400 members and guests. In a brief speech asknowledgIng receipt of the award Dr. Gainza emphasized his belief that economic independence is a necesgary condition for the existence and maintenance of a free press He said, also, that in his 25 vears of experience on La Prensa he knew of no case in which an advertiser tried to Influence the policy of the paper. “I can only say from personal experience that the best ally of a free press is advertising and advertisers,” he added. Discussing the vicissitudes of La Prensa in recent years, he noted that from 1947 to 1949 ad-
lof the paper was cut through government: decrees limiting use of newsprint. In the same period expenses of La Prensa doubled, he reported. “How could we survive?” he asked, He then pointed out that circulation had increased substanfially in this same period of time and that the papef was able to in-
crease its sales price and adver-
tising rates, also.
“We survived because clrculation increased and we could ralse rates without making any difference to the advertisers,” he said, had expected greater increases. “There is a loyalty between a free newspaper and its advertisers and subscribers—the advertisers are loyal to the paper because they know that the country could prosper only in a free atmosphere, with freedom of speech, freedom of the press and other freedoms.” Dr. Gainza received a spontaneous tribute of applause when introduced to his audience, and a
