WASHING TON,. Oet. 5 -— A hurricane churned northeastward along the Atlantic Coast today, and was expected to hit the Nan-
tucket and Cape Cod areas of Massachusetts with a 40- to 60-mile-an-hour: winds this after-
noon and tonight, The Weather Bureau's advisory warned shippers to “exercise caution off the coast from Cape Hattefas to Portland, Me.” ~The advisory said the storm was centered miles east of «Norfolk, Va., and moving north“eastward at eight to 10 miles an hour, wtih highest winds of 78 to 80 miles an hour near the center and gales extending outward as far as 250 miles to the north and east, The hurricane whirled off the Virginia-Carolina coast for 24 hours after claiming at least one life, battering a score of hamlets and causing more than $2 million damage to* Florida's Gold Coast and truck-crop region.
